Just For Laughs Montreal Offering Cheap Entry Passes For Comedy Fans

Just For Laughs Montreal is hands-down the biggest comedy event of the year, and it’s turning 30! For nearly the entire month of July, the city of Montreal hosts an arts festival and JFL is part of it. Becoming ground zero for the comedy world the last week of July. Hosting keynote speeches, panels, and most importantly some really great nights of stand-up comedy.

The festival organizers want you to join in on the fun so they are offering up their new ComicPro package for the fan-friendly cost of $69. Cheap right? That’s right it is. With the package, fans get access to all the panels, pitch sessions, speakers, master classes, in conversations, and awards luncheon. In addition, you’ll have access to select stand-up shows and podcast tapings, the JFL Film Festival, and the Zoofest Comedy events. You’ll also need somewhere to stay while in Montreal so the pass also gets you discounts to the festivals partner hotels.

Most importantly, The Laugh Button will be there, so you can write us notes and meet up with us in Montreal, who knows! Maybe we’ll steal away and go get culture at the casino in between all the amazing comedians that will appear at the festival like Adam Carolla, Amy Schumer, Anthony Jeselnik, Aziz Ansari, Hannibal Buress, Chelsea Handler, Epic Meal Time, Eric Andre, JB Smoove, Jeff Garlin, Jim Gaffigan, Key & Peele, Kevin Hart, Kristen Schaal, Lewis Black, Marc Maron, Paul F. Thompkins, Patton Oswalt, Pete Holmes, and Todd Barry to name a few.

Doug Benson's Smug Life Arrives on July 3rd

We love Doug Benson! His last album, Potty Mouth made our list of best albums of 2011 and we’re totally primed for the the release of his new stand-up special, Smug Life. As with his tradition he recorded the album on April 20th (4.20 heh).

However, this time around Benson is taking the stoner humor to a new level. The double disc CD will feature Benson’s set sober (uncooked) while the second will be the same set as high as he possibly can get (cooked). Which version will be better? That’s up to you to decide.

Here’s a preview widget of the album, tell your friends.

Video: Steve Martin Promo of His 1978 Stand-Up Album, "Wild And Crazy Guy"

Back in 1978, Steve Martin recorded this clip to promote his now classic stand-up album, Wild And Crazy Guy. It was Martin’s second and considered by many to be his best comedy album. It’s also a must-listen for anyone who is even remotely a comedy fan.

The clip was unearthed by From The Vaults, which is the folks at Warner Bros. digging up documentaries, interviews, and performances from the vast WB library.

Just For Laughs Chicago: An Interview with Susan Messing

At Just For Laughs Chicago we got the chance to sit down with Susan Messing, an icon in the Chicago improv scene. We talked about her upcoming wedding, improv classes and just what makes Chicago a great city for improv.

Susan, I am very honored to sit here with you.

Shut your hole!

No I’m serious.

I’m so local.

I’m so not.

How do you even know? Are you an improvator?

I am.

Horny! Where do you improvate?

I have my last 5B class tonight. But I never had the honor to study with you… studied at Second City with Rachel Mason.

Rachel is my home girl. She’s amazing. She is the person more than anybody that I absolutely felt no concern whatsoever leaving her with the level 2 curriculum because I knew she knew exactly where I was coming from. Plus I play with her in Kate Duffy and the Playboys all the time.

And I saw her with Messing a couple of times. This was a while ago; she maybe went up a year ago with you guys.

She’s awesome isn’t she?

She changed my whole perspective on the whole thing.

Well yeah, ‘cause it’s a dick-around for me. The Annoyance Theater is one of the few uncensored theaters on the planet, so that’s not something we take lightly in comedy, that’s a luxury- that’s not a right.

Right, I went up there to see “Messing with a Friend” as much as possible. I love the Annoyance Theater. Annoyance Theater. Annoyance Theater. See? That’s three name drops.

Well let me know when you want to come, I’ll comp you. I mean its only $5 a ticket. Even for “Just for Laughs” it was only $5, I appreciated that.

I saw you last year with, I believe, McCarthy? Mike McCarthy?

Uh I did it last year- well, Michael McCarthy I’m marrying.

Woah!! Wait a second!

You know what I’m talking about? Michael McCarthy who started the writing program at IO, yeah I’m marrying him in September.

Wow! That’s great. I took some workshops with him he’s a past SNL writer, The Drew Carey Show, Sesame Street, we we’re laughing about Sesame Street a little bit, too.

Yeah isn’t it weird to have SNL and Sesame Street together?

He set me straight too. He’s said, “If they pay you $2,500 a week you write whatever the fuck they want.”

Sesame Street fucking rocks, though, too. Sesame Street, I mean how can you not enjoy? He might be the only person whose resume includes SNL, Sesame Street, and Mike and Molly. Like, that is like the strangest combination. That’s like eating herring, liver and pickled pig’s feet; three disturbingly unlike things.

That’s awesome. Well congratulations! Is he still in LA, or back and forth?

He’s still in LA but he’s going to move here in the middle of August. Otherwise I’m going to have a husband who lives somewhere else.

Oh he’s moving to you?

Yeah and when he comes back? That’s when you take the writing classes again. That’s Michael’s stuff.

I took his portfolio workshop when I was getting my portfolio together

And it actually helped too! All those dittos and handouts he gave you?

Huge. Huge. Like 5 pages of notes from maybe a 45 minute session with him. I was just like, “wow!”

Awww! Michael’s going to be so happy that his shit worked!!

Very smart. That’s why I’m going to try and pull that kindness to, and give it to him too, and like slip him a few bucks and be like, “Hey, do you like this?” You know, just get some real feedback.

Absolutely. And when he comes back, like that’s a class that you’ll see an absolute payoff on, especially if you’re feeling driven. Chicago is a city where there is a tendency, we happen to be lazy unless we’re driven.  So he’s good because he absolutely gives you succinct notes that you can re-apply right away. And he just actually sent me today, 25 pages of his new screenplay, and it’s awesome! I don’t say that ‘cause he’s mine, ‘cause if it was bad, I’d be like, “Love you, Michael.” Or “You’re great in bed- keep working at that writing thing!”

HAHAhahaha!! That’s very cool. When’s the marriage? …when’s the wedding!!! “Marriage”

“When’s the marriage?” Actually I’d be perfectly happy if we just went to City Hall, but we are getting married September 30th at the James Hotel here.

Ooohh!

Well I’ve been married before. I married, uh, Joe Canale. And I had a lovely daughter with him. He now lives in Los Angeles but he comes back all the time to visit. He’s a great dad.

I didn’t know your love life, so, I feel like I know a little something about Sue now.

I’ve got 25 years of sleeping with some of the top names in comedy.

That’s great. Just what do you think makes Chicago so strong for Comedy?

We’re the epicenter of that shit!! We’re not afraid to fail because a glorious failure is a glorious success here, so people don’t have to worry about selling anything. I mean, its city process. So, New York and LA, they rock and I love them, but my friends there are really pushing productivity, not for shits and grins and joy, but because there’s a gun to their head. There’s no gun to your head in Chicago.

But being the place where no one cares to fail, big risk big reward, I mean I think that’s what it is.

It is yeah! I’m very fortunate to be part of Chicago comedy. I’ll do it forever or as long as they let me do it. If they’re dumb enough to do it, I’m smart enough to take it. YEAH, keep me there!

We had a lot of fun. Should we wrap it?

Brian and Chris are going to come to Messing With a Friend now. I think I’ve made a lover.

Yes. Absolutely. You’ve been beautiful as always, Susan, I appreciate the time.

Back at you. Come back and do level 2 and just slip in.

That’s very kind of you.

No, I’m serious. Cause you might as well get your money’s worth.

Susan Messing’s “Messing With A Friend” improv show is currently running at the Annoyance Theatre in Chicago. You can get more details here.

Dane Cook, Tom Green, and Bob Sagat & More Performing at The Laugh Factory Benefit for Mike MacDonald

Laughter may be the best medicine, but when you’re in need of an organ transplant, a more serious side-splitter is required. Comedian Mike MacDonald was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in March of 2011, and due to complications is in urgent need of a new liver. In MacDonald’s words, “devastating news. I was told the recent infection was so severe I couldn’t wait two years for a liver transplant.”

After announcing on his Facebook page that he would need to take a hiatus from his comedy career to rest up and bide his time for the life saving surgery, there was an overwhelming outpouring of support and several fundraisers have already been organized. “I was hoping a few people would respond,” says MacDonald, “but I had no idea that this would happen in my wildest dreams.” Jamie Masada, owner of legendary California venue The Laugh Factory, along with many prominent members of the comedy community put together a special fundraiser to help raise money for MacDonald’s surgery. The epic lineup including Dave Foley, Tom Green, Kevin Nealon, Harland Williams, Bobby Slayton, Paul Rodriguez, Dom Irrera, Dane Cook, Chris D’Elia, Bob Sagat and Ian Edwards, “Laugh & Liver” is sure to provide some comic relief to the ailing comedian.

The show is Wednesday, June 20th at 8pm at the Laugh Factory Los Angeles, and tickets are available at www.laughfactory.com. If you aren’t in the LA area and want to help Mike out, you can visit a donation page set up by friends to raise money.

Just For Laughs Chicago: An Interview With Eric Andre

In addition to a recurring role in ABC’s Don’t Trust The B**ch in Apt 23, Eric Andre is the star and mastermind behind the bizarre The Eric Andre Show on [adult swim] which fellow comedian Hannibal Buress co-stars. The show is a wild, cable access-style gathering of weird, and we get the impression Andre wouldn’t want it any other way. We caught up with him at Just For Laughs Chicago to talk about his show and things… well they got a bit weird judging by the photo.

We saw Hannibal last night, saw you open for Amy the night before

Cool, cool

You guys were rockin’ it strong

Thanks man… tryin’ to, yeah.

How did all that come to life? ‘Cause it seems like it came out of, respectively… left field

I was in the lab for years, man, I was deep underground. Rigorous training. Me and Jean- Claude Van Damme… just dippin’ our hands in glue, then dippin’ our hands in broken glass and fighting each other. I made a demo a few years ago, for the show. And it just took me forever to edit it and get it out there. Basically, for The Eric Andre Show I knew I wouldn’t be able to sell it just through a script, just through black and white ink, cause it’s just too visual and too crazy stream of consciousness kind of show, so me and a couple buddies rented out this abandoned bodega in Brooklyn and shot a little 7 minute demo of what the show could be, in this bodega. And then it took me… I had to teach myself Final Cut to edit it, and that took me like a year. Then we shopped it around to all the networks and [adult swim] loved it! They wanted to make a pilot, that was Thanksgiving 2010 I found this out. When I got back from the holidays they wanted to make it, but I started doing Apartment 23, so I had to wait until May of 2011 to make the pilot. Then Apartment 23 got picked up, so we had to shoot that, so it took ‘til just now to shoot The Eric Andre Show.

Wow. Just about what? Two years then, really. From inception.

Yeah we shot the demo in summer of 2009 and we just wrapped the first season, so it took like 3 years to make it actually happen, yeah.

Very cool. I just admire that whole fact how you were able to get it together.

Thanks man.

I I read a little bit that you did it yourself so I just wanted to pick your brain a little bit. I had no idea you taught yourself the editing software and everything.

Yeah, I had to! Because I ran out of money shooting the thing. So I was like, “I can’t pay an editor.” Besides there was so much footage it was such a mess, I wouldn’t even have been able to communicate what I wanted to somebody else so I was just like, “I gotta teach myself how to do this.”

How’s it workin’ with Hannibal Buress on your side there?

Hannibal’s the best, man. He’s the reason we have a show, the show wouldn’t be the same without him, you know?

So we know we only have another minute with you. Since you mentioned that you are on Don’t Trust the B**ch in Apartment 23. Just need to know how is it working with Dawson himself, James Van Der Beek? Does he have any comedy skills?

Aww he’s the best man, he’s the funniest and it’s so awesome. I think he has the best job on the show cause he gets to play himself, like his bizarro version of himself. He’s totally got the comedy skills to pay the bills for sure! And he’s the nicest guy on the planet earth. Just a total sweetheart.

The Eric Andre Show airs on [adult swim] Sunday at 12:30am. Don’t Trust The B**ch in Apartment 23 will return to ABC this fall. Visit Eric’s website for more information.

Just For Laughs Chicago: John Oliver, Sarah Silverman and Jeff Ross Roasts Chicago

For the fourth night in a row the Just For Laughs festival carried huge waves of positivity through Chicago. Powerhouse Aziz Ansari performed for a sold out crowd at the prestigious Chicago Theatre as Kelly Carlin told stories about her father at UP Comedy Club. At the TBS LOL Lounge Julian McCullough hosted the very funny lineup of new up and coming comedians.

JOHN OLIVER AT THE VIC THEATRE

John Oliver was welcomed to an energetic crowd thanks to the tight, terrific, ten minutes of comedy delivered by Mike Lawrence. Mike had the crowd roaring at his modern day references of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as well as his story about the one time he felt a sense of power… working at McDonalds and telling patrons they no longer served the McRib!

Once Oliver occupied the stage at the Vic Theatre, he had a captivated and responsive audience for a strong 60 minute set. He pushed the limits of the audience beliefs as he dabbled in taboo topics such as politics, religion, and world views of the United States.

I was curious how fans would respond to his polarizing bits; I was pleasantly surprised they l laughed harder and harder throughout the show. John rocked the sold out show as fans left the venue smiling, laughing and retelling his jokes as they strolled along the sidewalk.

JEFF ROSS ROASTS CHICAGO AT PARK WEST THEATRE

The roast master general Jeff Ross was in Chi-town as he pulled out many unexpected bombshells for his eager fans. After a couple of fun opening acts including Kyle Dunnigan, the automated voice over announced that one of Jeff’s favorite friends is here… Sarah Silverman!

In petite jean shorts and tall stockings, Sarah experimented with new material on a crowd that soaked it all in. Sprinkling in a few of her classic jokes, Sarah provided the spark that set fire for the roast of Chicago.

After Sarah’s fifteen minutes Jeff came out. As the two met for a hug on stage, a glass of scotch fell out of his hands and spilled everywhere. It wouldn’t have been a big deal yet there were electrical wires for the guitars, keyboards and drums on stage. Ross’ first instincts were to avoid getting electrocuted, which he successfully did.

Jumping right in, Jeff began ripping Chicago apart and the crowd loved it! From making fun of the Cubs baseball organization to south side stereotypes, fans enjoyed the witty lines Ross so confidently delivered. But the roast didn’t stop at the windy city.

After walking down stage he brought up an old electric guitar which he explained was from his high school days. He played the Deliverance theme song as he started roasting high profile figures that have passed. Audience members either laughed or moaned when he made fun of the late Whitney Houston and Steve Jobs.

Unforeseen twists continued to surprise the audience as the funny Jeff Garlin strolled out on stage. Both Jeff’s wore matching white blazers as Garlin sat down behind the lonely snare drum and cymbal. As Ross read one liners about hot topics such as abortion and marijuana, Garlin provided comedic relief by playing rim shots after each joke.

Garlin was first to admit this was his first time playing drums and it was apparent, yet his loose style and impromptu beats provided fresh comedy during the set.

First attempted in last year’s Just For Laughs and back by popular demand, Jeff speed roasted random members of the audience. The volunteers had to know what they were getting into as they rushed the stage to be roasted by the master himself. Another trick up his sleeve was to pull Sarah Silverman back on stage to assist with the bashings. I feel no pity for these folks as Ross and Silverman flexed their roasting muscles by ripping on each individual until all ideas were exhausted.

This powerhouse lineup straight up rocked the Park West Theatre! The Just For Laughs festival is filled with great comedians and awesome acts as the power of laughter is vibrant and alive in my sweet home, Chicago.

Just For Laughs Chicago: An Interview With Brian Posehn

Brian Posehn was at Just For Laughs Chicago to perform The Nerd Show with fellow comedians Pete Holmes, Brent Weinbach, Dan Telfer, Hari Kondabolu, and Mike Lawrence. We caught up with him the next day to talk nerd jokes and metal.

I saw the nerd show here yesterday. So what really makes a ‘nerd’ comedian?

It’s such a weird thing, I mean now… I don’t feel like I started that whole thing, but I was one of the first to do that. But for me it was always just about, I prefer- when I first started doing standup I would just talk about anything and I would just pull jokes out of the air and just write anything that I could write, you know? And so things wouldn’t be that close to me, I wrote jokes that didn’t really happen to me, or a lot of guys when you’re first starting and you’re finding your voice, you’ll just use anything. And as I got older, and as I saw other comics, I figured out that I liked people who were themselves onstage, you know? Like when I came up in the ‘80’s there were people that were doing fake personalities like Emo Williams and you know… NOT Emo Williams I was combining that with something else… Rema Williams- Emo Phillips! My brain… yeah nerdy. So I got away from that and got more into people like Louis CK and other friends of mine that were themselves. And I wasn’t doing what they were doing- I wasn’t going through what they were doing.

My reality was, I’m, at the time, in my 20’s or 30’s and I still care about things like heavy metal, and I still care about things like comic books and horror movies. So I just started talking about those things on stage. And then realized there were a lot of other people that had the same likes as me, or they were married to guys that were like me, or had boyfriends that were like me, or they were the female version of me.

Then I realize, it wasn’t like I found a “niche” but I just found people who related to what I was doing. I feel like this “nerd comedy” thing has come out of what some of us were doing. Myself and Patton Oswalt, not being afraid to talk about the things we love on stage, and then other comics have just kind of gone with it. But I feel like you can kind of screw yourself. I’m real careful because I still play regular comedy clubs and do regular shows, that I don’t do too much nerd heavy stuff. I don’t wanna just go, “Hey you guys anybody have a level 7 dwarf out there? Who else plays D&D?” I can’t just talk about it. I can’t ‘cause I still have to make a 50 year old lady in Dallas who’s never played D&D, I have to make her laugh too.  So you can’t go heavy on that. What I do now if I’m playing regular clubs and about a band like Slayer, I have a bit about Slayer, I’ll walk people through it. I feel like many of these young nerd comics kind of love that they don’t give a shit. Uh, you can bleep me.

No, no! The more the merrier, please.

Oh… Fuck! Cock! Balls!!

Wait let me get a quote there…

But I feel like some of them don’t care. And I come from the old school still. To where I started in front of a brick wall and feel like I still have to please the customer. That’s the reason you’re there. But being able to do a nerd show, like last night, is pretty freeing. I don’t have to worry about that stuff. I can just say whatever I want and know they’ll be able to follow me.

You’ve said that a couple times, “finding your voice” and trying to find that meaning. Do you feel like you’ve had to let go of your own integrity sometimes? Or your own passion? I compare it to drowning puppies. I have to kill that joke, or kill that bit. Or I have to get rid of the script here…

Well sometimes, yeah. Sometimes playing those clubs, I mean. I have an audience, luckily, but sometimes they’re not there. Sometimes I’ll be in a city where there aren’t a lot of fat nerds in black t-shirts with facial hair and pod tits, and then I’m like, “Oh God, what am I going to do?” But I’ve made my act relatable enough and my life is relatable enough now that I am a father. I’m a weirder father than most people in the audience, so they walk away going, “That guy was weird. He talked about weird things.” But I still hope that there’s enough relatable laughs in there for them.

With your last record being on Relapse a couple of years ago now. What new metal bands or records have you been listening to recently?

There aren’t a lot of new bands. I’m still listening to 3 Inches of Blood, bands that have been around a little while that I really like… Municipal Waste. One of my favorite records recently is from an old, old band that I grew up with, but I feel a lot of old metal bands are making some of their best music now. Last year my favorite record was from one of my best friends – Anthrax. They put out one of their career best records and they’re dudes in their late 40’s and still making great metal. Yeah I like all that, I love Lamb of God. I like the same stuff I’ve liked for a while. There’s newer bands like Skeletonwitch, that only have a couple records under their belt, but I can’t think of anybody who’s brand brand new. Ghost last year was a record I got into- their first record. I really like them a lot. Are you familiar?

Yeah definitely.

I love that they kind of have that Mercyful Fate kind of spookiness, but then mixed with an almost Blue Oyster Cult musicality and melody. I like that.

A sister website to The Laugh Button is Metal Insider so we’re heavily involved in the metal music scene as well.

Oh nice. Yeah I still stay on top of it, I still read magazines. I’m still the same 15-year-old kid I was. I listen to a lot of the same shit I grew up with, but then I also still am looking for new bands. I’m not the old guy that’s like, “All new metal is dumb.” I have some of those friends. My friends in some bands won’t listen to new bands, they’re like, “why would I listen to that if I could just listen to Iron Maiden. They just sound like Iron Maiden.” And it’s like well… grandpa.

You take your kid out to shows yet?

No, he’s too little. He’s three, so we went to Yo Gabba Gabba last year, and we’re going to go see Batman live this year.

I’ve got a six and a two year old, so I know exactly where you’re coming from.

I can’t wait till he can see Rush, like that’s the one that I’m going to groom him towards. ‘Cause I go to Rush shows and I see guys with their kids and I’m like, “Oh I can’t wait to be that guy!”

Few more years. Not far away. That’s great.

But I know he’s going to be like, “Rush? Really Dad? These guys are like 60!”

“These songs are 10 minutes long, man. What’s going on?”

“These guys are nerds!”

Just For Laughs Chicago: An Interview With Amy Schumer

The day after her killer set during the Just For Laughs Chicago, we got the opportunity to sit down with Amy Schumer to talk about hecklers, selling sex, and training like a boxer for the taping of her new one-hour stand-up special.

Awesome job last night, holy shitballs!

Aww, thanks!! Did you see me ruin that girl’s life?

The pretty one up front?

Mmhmm…she was taking pictures of my vagina!!

I thought it was her boyfriend.

No…they were both. She was like, “spread your legs more!” and I was like…

What??

And I still warned her, “Do you want to do this?”

Well, you gave her a chance to stop

She was like, “Yeah” and I just looked right at her and asked, “when’s the last time you saw your dad?”

*laughs*

And you should have seen her face, she was just… like she submitted. She was like, “okay, okay.” I was like, “I see you. I SEE you. Don’t.”

She got up and left though!

Yeah.

I don’t know if it was right after that, or sometime…

She went to try to find her biological father.

*laughs*

But I’m a teacher like that. I warn you, and then I…and I could see this girl has not seen her dad. So, that’s it. I’m sorry.

Good call

You mess with the Jew, you get the horns. What do you want?

It was fantastic overall

I’m doing my closer, and I have to do that right before it ends.

It interrupted the set too! I mean you were in your flow…

I mean to be up there for an hour, doing your jokes that you’ve been working on for the better part of a decade, and have someone just be trying to take pictures of your vagina! That’s grounds for saying something kind of biting, right?

Absolutely! You have integrity, and you’ve got to stick with it.

I was like, “bitch!”

I love your comedy. I think it’s fantastic.

Thank you! Thanks a lot.

But I also noticed some of the folks last night were seeing you for the first time and might not have known the back history of Miss Amy. It was hilarious watching them.

Watching them squirm?

Well, yeah!

Well I can’t pander to that. I have no interest in toning it down so it’s - palatable for everybody.

That’s what I was wondering, did you ever have a family member, or a friend, who you were like, “Oh. That one person in the family, they go to church every Sunday.”

No! I’m a sociopath. Last night I knew there were bathroom attendants there and I still did 5 minutes about how useless bathroom attendants are.

You did it quietly though!

Yeah my sister was like, “you were whispering into a microphone.” I was, “should I not?” and then I thought, “nah, they don’t speak English.” Let’s be real right now.

*laughs* That’s the bad thing about stereotypes.

They’re true?

*laughs* I noticed some newlywed couples. Seeing them squirm. You should be some type of marriage counselor as well.

Oh God.

Just part time, just to let them know, “this isn’t going to work, you don’t talk about…”

“Let’s talk about the flaws in your relationship.” Magazines like Cosmo have asked, “Will you do an advice column?” I respond, “Do you think I know about functional relationships? Do you hear? I know about semen. That’s something I can tell you about, but I have no advice to give anyone.” Because I’m the authority on one thing, they think, “Can you help people?” I respond, “No! I’ve got nothing for you.”

*laughs* That’s beautiful. Your heels too! You were talking about your heels

Yeah! I was practicing.

For an hour special next week, you said.

Mhmm. Filming it a week from Saturday.

Do you mind talking about that a little bit? What’s going on there?

I’m filming it in San Francisco, at the Filmore. Two shows on Saturday night. Last night was a big nice theater, so I wanted to dress up. Usually I dress newly homeless. No one ever thinks, “oh the headliner is here.” They usually think, “we don’t have any change.” I wear old cowboy boots, and there’s nothing feminine about it. One of my newer things is talking about how annoying, it’s so annoying to get ready to go out as a female. It doesn’t work ‘cause I’m dressed so shitty on stage. The crowd thinks, “how would YOU know?” Look at me right now. This isn’t acceptable. These are yoga pants.

Who’s judging?

This isn’t a real - this is not a bra, like this doesn’t count as a bra. I think, “Oh, there are buttons, so it’s like a bra!” No… Yeah so, I practice in the heels, and I can do it, I can do it.

Why the heels though for the special? Is that like part of the gig?

It’s a big nice show. It’s an hour special, and it’ll be out there forever, or until the world ends. Try and get the legs going ya know? My philosophy, the first time I did a special for Comedy Central, people are flipping around on the TV seal-like and think, “A female comedian, what’s on next?” But if they think, “Oh, she’s wearing a dress! There’s some legs… she has boobs. Maybe I’ll watch for one second.” They hear me by accident and then they stay tuned. It’s a little bit of a trick on my part.

Pulls ‘em in…

Yeah, and I’m not saying I’m the most slammin’ girl ever! But, some of the chicks in porn, I’m as good as those… monsters. I think they’ll stay tuned for at least 90 seconds until they decide whether or not they like my stand-up.

So you support that sex sells then?

Well I’m not in denial about it. People are trying to take pictures of my vagina on stage! I mean, come on! We can’t lie about that.

*laughs* You had a huge Rolling Stone article recently…

You know what was a bummer was about that? We sent them a bunch of pictures. I just did a photo shoot, and gave them over. They were like, “mmm… we found a picture from when you were younger  we’re going to go with.” It’s from four years ago, they’re like, “we want to do it when you were still fuckable.” And I was like, “what about these? I took them yesterday.” They were like, “ Woah!! Time has NOT been kind!” But it was really exciting.

Well I was going to ask you if they were nice to you or not, but it seems like…

No, they were nice. It was nice to be in there. I didn’t really understand what it was. They were, “Oh, well it’s an issue, but it’s not on stands.” So I thought no one is ever going to see it. Actually, a bunch of people wrote to me and said that they saw it. Yeah! Rolling Stone!

Hell yeah! Big time. What are you going to do the rest of the week here? Are they shipping you out soon?

I’m here ‘till Saturday. Got a lot of shows. I’m doing a lot of shows… hanging out with my sister. I’ve been boxing lately, so after this I have a session. Because I’m not drinking before my special, and I haven’t had sex in a month in a half, so it’s kind of my only outlet. Yeah… so I just, I need to punch some shit!

*laughs* So if anyone comes into the room, you’re just going to punch them?

Yeah, if anybody gets in my way. Seriously. I don’t care if they’re elderly… a child. Get out of my way! So I’ll just do a bunch of shows and box during the day. And drink a lot of coffee.

Hell yeah. Well, Amy, we appreciate the time.

Thank you!

Thanks a lot! And keep on crushing it.

Oh I’m going to do my best.

Just For Laughs Chicago: Kevin Smith, Hannibal Buress, and T.J. Miller

AN EVENING WITH KEVIN SMITH AT CHICAGO THEATRE

Heavy hitters arrived with their powerhouse routines as Just For Laughs Chicago delivered a stellar night of comedy. Inside the vast Chicago Theatre the dynamo Kevin Smith kicked off the night with a unique style of questions and answers from the audience. Fans filled the isle waiting for one of two microphones for their chance to ask Kevin questions about his career, life, and everything in between.

“Do what you love” was a common theme that Kevin relayed to his followers.

Fans were receptive to Kevin’s stories as he discussed his podcast SModcast, Clerks, comic books and detailed stories about his family life. Many fans patiently waited in line to talk to Kevin as some of his answers took over 20 minutes to respond. Smith clearly cares about his fans as his answers were most honest and sincere.

Next on deck was the home run hitter Hannibal Buress.

HANNIBAL BURESS: STILL SAYING STUFF AT PARK THEATRE

The Chicago native continues to do good for the community as all proceeds of the show went to St. Paul Lutheran School, the school he attended on the west side. Even though proceeds were going to a good cause he didn’t attempt to censor his routine.

Stories of past confrontations filled his set as the audience was extremely receptive to his hilarious tales. From punching gang members trying to steal his $20 watch to getting in skirmishs over having scramble eggs opposed to fried eggs, Hannibal delivered nothing but grand slams to his hometown crowd.

T.J. MILLER PRESENTS PERFORMANCE ANXIETY AT UP COMEDY CLUB

Inside The Second City’s UP Comedy Club, T.J. Miller hosted his bi-weekly Los Angeles based show Performance Anxiety. Exciting news for Chicagoans is that the LA-based show is expanding to the windy city and will be a regular show at none other than the Pleasure Chest - a top notch sex shop.

T.J. had a fun time interacting with the crowd as he transitioned between comedians Mike Lawrence, Sean Flannery, and Bret Ernst.

Just For Laughs Chicago: The Nerd Show and Scott Adsit & Kevin Dorff

THE NERD SHOW AT UP COMEDY CLUB

The Nerd Show. It isn’t the most attractive title yet it definitely attracted a house full of eager audience members and patrons. Host Pete Holmes delivered a night that resonated with the fellow geeks in the audience as he set the stage for Brian Posehn, Brent Weinbach, and Mike Lawrence. The humor delivered by comedians was smart and witty as their jokes revolved around Y2K, sexual tension in society and unscripted crowd interactions.

Dan Telfer, The Onion writer and my past instructor at The Second City, brought his unique style of nerd to the stage as laughs rained when he explained how Raccoons are mutating and making possums their slaves.

Comedian Hari Kondabolu quickly attacked suburban America as he shared his observations on how status is show by the number of kids you carry. “Want to be more popular on your walk around the block, have another kid” he clarified.

The audience of this show was selective on handing out their giggles yet when they chose to let go, the UP Comedy Club echoed with laughs.

SCOTT ADSIT & KEVIN DORFF AT IO THEATRE

iO Theatre (formerly Improv Olympic) was the final stage of the night as Scott Adsit (30 Rock) and Kevin Dorff (Adult Swim’s Delocated) brought unique comedy to the Just For Laughs festival. No script. No plan. No rehearsal. This was improvisation at its best.

These gentlemen made a full one hour show off the audience suggestion “plutonium” and it was off the wall funny. Adsit and Dorff had a melodic dance to their show that took the audience inside five or six different scenes.

The twists of the scenes came from the pros. From a concerned parent (Adsit) addressing his sons high school gym teacher (Dorff) of sexting, an aggressive tennis battle provided the appropriate resolution which brought tears of happiness to the audiences eyes. Even the ladies from NPR sitting next to me were crying with laughter.

The single camera set up on 30 Rock had an underlying tone to the show as both gentlemen moved with a stage presence that resembled action seen on the TV show. Both comedians took moments to absorb what the other player said then replied in a calm, direct and usually humorous fashion. They controlled the pace of the show as they played with faster or slower rhythm of the scenes.
It was a great night of diversified comedy at the TBS Just For Laughs festival as we are stoked to see even more unique acts throughout the week!

Just For Laughs Chicaco: Amy Schumer at Park West Theatre

The comedy coming from Just For Laughs festival in Chicago has been intense as Wednesday night was nothing less than remarkable.

Eric Andre opened for the powerful Amy Schumer as he created the initial energy inside the Park West Theatre. Eric started many of his jokes calm and collected which usually escalated into yells and sprints around stage. His liveliness was magnetic as the crowd released their laughs during the craziest parts of his routine.

Earlier in the week when he was on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon I saw him perform a joke which he repeated at the Park West in Chicago. It’s cool though because the audience was filled with working middle class Caucasians who never heard his original delivery. Eric had the crowd laughing at the text messages his ex-fling’s boyfriend sent him, check out what I’m talking about here.

Eric brought the heat and warmed up the mic for the very funny Amy Schumer.

It was clear that it was some of the audiences first time seeing Amy and that’s their problem. She acknowledged that audience members originally assume she is going to talk about shopping but they are quickly fooled when she starts ranting about her lady parts.

Amy provided great entertainment for over an hour as it was great watching how the couples in attendance reacted. I saw folks laughing their ass off (along with myself) then I also noticed newlywed’s become uneasy because they never discussed taboo topics like abortion or anal. Amy took no prisoners as she delivered a hilarious hour long set.

Her points of views were refreshing for all the working stiffs in the audience. “The Plan B contraceptive pill is actually my Plan A. I take it the night before, I plan ahead” she said with a straight face.

Dressed in tall high heels she called attention to her shoes mid-set, “I’m practicing on how to walk around in these things because I’m filming a new one hour special next week.”

She had no problem moving around on her stilts as she illustrated how younger drunken chicks look after an “unsuccessful” night at the club. Amy nailed it as she called attention to these train wrecks, “Their face melting with tears and mascara, puke covering their neon tube top, I want to ask what your goal was for the night?”

I think newlywed couples should contract Amy as psychologist or marriage counselor to help both parties recognize if they are wasting each other’s time. Her insights were true and spot on. Amy was a flipping joy to watch (again) and I can’t wait to see her new special.
