Chazz Palminteri on Comedy, Chris Rock, and Richard Pryor

One of the perks of doing Comedy Matters TV is getting to see movies before they hit the theatre. That’s still as much fun to me as when I go into The Comic Strip and make my own drink with the soda gun at the bar. I never get tired of doing that!

I’ve been a fan of Academy Award-nominated actor Chazz Palminteri for many years, or at least since I saw A Bronx Tale, which came out as a film in 1993. It had actually been a stage play before where Chazz acted out all 18 parts by himself.

So when I knew I was going to have the opportunity to sit down with him in a one-on-one, to talk about his new film Mighty Fine, I was kind of excited and really looking forward to it.

The interview went so great because Chazz started off asking me how much time we had so he’d know whether to make his answers short or long. I told him I’d stay as long as he could keep talking so we went for a good 30 minutes.

When Chazz did Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway, he played Cheech, a hitman with an affinity for writing plays, a comedic role he said only Woody Allen could have written. That part got Chazz the nomination for an Academy Award.

I felt that despite all the violence from his past films, Chazz also had a comedic side to him. So I felt it was important to make part of my interview about comedy, what he thought of stand-up, did he ever try it, and who were his favorite comics. He had some cool answers, and a lot of insight into the comedy world.

Check out the video to hear what he had to say about stand-up, Chris Rock, Richard Pryor and more, and go see Mighty Fine! You’ll definitely enjoy it!

Watch Andy Samberg Make A Speech At Harvard

Andy Samberg was the guest speaker at Harvard’s Class Day. Class Day is not the formal graduation for the college, as it appears to just be a time for some good speeches.

Without giving away much of Samberg’s speech, he seems to have appeared under false pretense thinking he was the recipient of an honorary degree. This led to a few barbs at the dean between a few impressions by his most famous Saturday Night Live characters Mark Zuckerberg, Mark Wahlberg, and Nicholas Cage.

The speech is about 20 minutes long, but there are shittier ways to spend the 20 minutes.

Video: Jon Benjamin Reveals His Parenting Style

In honor of the new Adam Sandler/Andy Samberg movie That’s My Boy VICE launched a three part guide to parenting. In the first part, someone thought it would be a good idea to check in on Jon Benjamin to see what kinda parenting structure he adopts.

Turns out it’s not similar to the style of the moms featured in TIME Magazine but probably just as traumatizing.

Stand-Up Clip of The Day: Drew Carey's Debut on The Tonight Show

College Newspaper Responds To Joke In Hannibal Buress Special

On Hannibal Buress’ new stand-up special Animal Furnace the comedian goes on a lengthy joke about a college gig he performed at Eastern Illinois University a few years back. To advance the show, Buress performed an interview with the school’s newspaper, The Daily Eastern News. The resulting article became fodder for the comedian to mock because of it’s apparent poor construction, revealing of Buress’ fee, and weird ties to racial diversity.

After the special aired this weekend, The Daily Eastern News decided to respond to Buress’ joke at their expense, calling the comedians’ comments “unfair” and “skewed.”

It became increasingly clear that Buress has included this type of commentary in his performance for a considerable length of time, and as a publication, we feel that such criticism is unwarranted.[The DEN]

The publication specified Buress’ fees came from student funding, therefore they followed the same transparency protocol they would if they covered a Student Senate or Pension Board meeting.

The response also added that Buress’ own incorrect statements (specifically his comment about “the streets”) led to the reporting on this as fact in the original article. In his bit, Buress freely took the blame for “the streets” portion of the article as the DEN did for its use of the phrase “comedic jokes.” What was not addressed in The DEN’s response was the ridiculous racial diversity statements claimed in the first story.

A quick search of The DEN’s online archives did not yield any links to the original article. However, a 2009 article makes reference to Buress appearing later that year. If this were the show that spawned the interview in question. The original article was written in March of 2009, so it’s taken nearly 3 years since the incident and the special to air on Comedy Central for the college paper to respond.

5 Reasons To Check Out Dave Hill's New Book, "Tasteful Nudes"

Comedian, musician, satarist, and snappy dresser Dave Hill is releasing his new book, Tasteful Nudes today. It’s Hill’s first book and in addition to making a kickass rock video for its release, he also gave us 5 Reasons one should all go out and pick up a copy of Tasteful Nudes.

Reason #5
If you buy my book I will take you to Atlantic City, the popular funtime destination, for a full weekend or until the money ($140 USD) runs out, whichever comes first. Also, I will bring a gun. And maybe clown makeup. Not sure yet.

Reason #4
If you buy my book I will totally come over to your house and watch as many episodes of “Ice Loves Coco” with you as you want and I will give a full explanation as to why exactly I think their relationship works so well and we could all learn a lot from it (NOTE: This will happen during commercials. I am going to need a dry-erase board. And some Scotch maybe). In fact, if it’s cool with you, I would like to come over to your house and do this anyway whether you buy my book or not. Please let me know where your head is at with this.

Reason #3
If you buy my book I will see to it that your name, image, likeness, or other unequivocal aspect of your identity is never secretly used during a witchcraft ceremony and/or satanic mass taking place in the woods not far from your house ever again. If you’d rather I just send you a care package of delicious smoked meats instead, however, I’m happy to do that too. Your call. Personally, I’d go with the witchcraft thing, though. It’s not like you can relax while eating smoked meats if there’s crazy shit going on in the woods anyway. Trust me on this one.

Reason #2
If you buy my book I will personally call your high school boyfriend or girlfriend and tell them that actually, no, it was you who broke up with them, not the other way around, thank you very much. If at some point during our conversation, however, one thing leads to another and they end up inviting me over to their house for sex or, you know, whatever, I need you to be cool with that. You had a nice run but it’s time to move on already, dammit. That shit was years ago.

Reason #1
If you buy my book you will have a lifetime of reading enjoyment. Or at least several hours. The more I think about it, I guess it depends how fast or slow you read. Also, on a not-so-related note, I will make out with you. Just wanted to put that out there. Or maybe we could just go get a sandwich or something. I’m easy. Really, really easy.

Take a Look at Bill Murray as FDR in "Hyde Park on The Hudson" Trailer

Take a gander at the movie Hyde Park on Hudson, the forthcoming film starring Bill Murray as former president Franklin Roosevelt. The flick is not set to hit theaters until December and it tells the story about America’s first family interacting with the King and Queen of England as told from the story of FDR’s cousin (and possible mistress).

Murray takes some serious bouts every once in a while and this might be the movie that gives him the Academy Award rather than just the nomination.

Mick Jagger Hosted SNL: Take A Bow

Well, we made it to the final episode of Saturday Night Live’s season 37. To bring it all home we got ourselves Mick Jagger as both the host and musical guest. To help the Rolling Stones frontman out they brought in Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters, and Jeff Beck for some backing rock. It’s also the night we’d find out if the rumors of departing cast members would be true.

It’s guaranteed to be a night full of cameos and great sketches. Let’s see how Jagger made out as captain of the ship.

COLD OPEN THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW
As soon as the intro to this sketch ran I thought, “Here we go! Kristen Wiig’s greatest hits.” I’m pretty sure we haven’t seen this sketch since Melissa McCarthy hosted and she definitely went for the physical jokes. Jon Hamm does a convincing Johhny Prosciutto and we’re off.

MONOLOGUE
Thanks for clearing up some FAQ’s for us Mick. We see why you may have regretted that lifetime Ruby Tuesdays offer.

SECRET WORD
And Kristen Wiig’s greatest hits continues with Mindy Grayson’s final bow, the funny thing is, this time around I actually found this sketch funny. I think it was because Jagger’s ability to just kinda go for the silly.

KARAOKE
This sketch could have also been called “let’s mock Mick Jagger for a bit.” Jagger has always been good at making fun of himself when he drops by SNL and this was the chance for the cast to get some impressions in there.

DIGITAL SHORT: LAZY SUNDAY 2
Wow, if this doesn’t indicate Andy Samberg would be departing the show, I’m not sure what does. “Lazy Sunday” launched his career on SNL and performing a sequel all these years later. and if you want to get even more conspiracy theory the final line will help. “On these New York streets I honed my fake rap penmanship, that’s how it began, and that’s how I’ma finish it.”

POLITICS NATION WALL STREET
I think we have our first dud sketch of the night.

MICK JAGGER AND ARCADE FIRE “THE LAST TIME”
Oh an look the bass player from The Strokes as well. Let’s do this.

WEEKEND UPDATE
Yes! Stefon returns and this time around Bill Hader is trying so hard to not crack and lose it. He almost makes it too! That is until he gets to the human R2D2.

Here’s a web exclusive/cut sketch from the live show.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE AT AN OUTDOOR FESTIVAL
I’m pretty bummed that this sketch didn’t make it to the web because the visual of Bobby Moynihan drunkenly dancing to Dave Matthews Band’s “Ants Marching” is pretty hilarious. Jagger dressed up and also delivered a hilarious Steven Tyler impression.

MICK JAGGER AND THE FOO FIGHTERS “19th NERVOUS BREAKDOWN / IT’S ONLY ROCK AND ROLL” MEDLEY
The music for the episode was great. Probably because of the variety of bands performing and Jagger hanging out with them all.

THE CALIFORNIANS
I can’t believe they brought this clip back. Let’s see if Steve Martin can help it… Nope, no he can’t.

MICK JAGGER & JEFF BECK “TEA PARTY”
I’m not 100% sure if this was Jagger’s attempt to take a political stance or an attempt for a joke. Either way, it’s better to just let Mick perform. Also, did Mick say “shit” on live television at nearly 1:30am in the morning on a Saturday night? Someone looney will probably complain about this.

SHE’S A RAINBOW
What a great send off for Kristen Wiig. Giving her a dance with all the cast members as Arcade Fire serenades her with “She’s A Rainbow” and “Ruby Tuesday.” Many of your friends stopped by to see you off to Kristen. Obviously things got emotional a few times, especially with Bill Hader, Jason Sudekis, and papa bear Lorne Michaels. Thanks for the 7 years Kristen, but did did Mick accidentally call you “Tristen” before he gave you that twirl?

Well, another season is in the books and what a proper send off for one of the show’s most beloved cast members. Mick Jagger grabbed a tremendous amount of screen time, owning the night right up until Wiig took it with her final curtain call. The episode was focused and on point, showing off some of Wiig’s greatest hits with a seasoned entertainer as host allowing a proper bow to be put on season 37. SNL, we’ll miss you until the fall.

Want to see Mick Jagger take a stab at stand-up? Here’s a commercial that didn’t make it to air.

How Does Dave Hill Promote A New Book? With A Rock Video Of Course

Years there a band existed called Uptown Sinclair. The band wrote some pretty boss power pop. But perhaps more memorable was their frontman Dave Hill who was very funny with his words and writing. So much that I got ended up on Hill’s mailing list and got funny emails from him for years. All documenting Hill’s journey and hijinks as he worked the improv circuit, wrote for other outlets, and formed/performed with a bunch of new bands.

Now it turns out the comedian/writer/musician/man about town is releasing his first book, Tasteful Nudes on May 22nd. The book has received “heaps of praise for the book from some pretty neat people like Malcolm Gladwell, Ira Glass, Janeane Garofolo, Andy Richter, and more who all say it’s really funny and they enjoyed it.”

To celebrate the release, Hill combined his music, comedic, and literary wit into one music video celebrating the album release.

Tasteful Nudes is a collection of essays from Hill including the following…

  • How Dave accidentally arranged a lunch date with a high-end prostitute or became an unwitting accomplice to the theft of three hundred pounds of meat
  • What it’s like to spend five long hours inside Sing Sing prison with 300 murderers and rapists
  • The highs (and mostly lows) of coming to a party dressed as Santa Claus
  • The simple beauty of losing your innocence to a Japanese toilet
  • The importance of rocking the f@#k out of people
  • Being forced to spend the afternoon posing as a Cleveland police officer when all you really wanted was a sandwich
  • You know—just average, run-of-the-mill stuff.

Prayers And Condolences For Ardie Fuqua

Hands down there’s no nicer guy than Ardie Fuqua and no one who loved his kids more than Ardie Fuqua. What a shock to hear that he lost his 19 year old son Jamaal in a car accident this weekend. How does anyone make sense of something like that?

Jeffrey Gurian with Ardie Fuqua in happier times. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ardie!

The last time I saw Ardie and Jamaal was last March 31st, at Chris Rock’s The Motherf**ker With The Hat! I was there with Richie Tienken and Ardie and Jamaal sat right in front of us. He was so proud he could bring his son with him to see Chris and afterwards we all went up to Chris’ dressing room to congratulate him. Ardie was beaming as he introduced Richie and I to his son. He couldn’t have been prouder and rightfully so. He was a beautiful kid. Very respectful, and just like his Dad.

Most people who experience a tragedy of this magnitude are allowed to grieve, but comedians are in that rarefied place where no matter what happens in their lives they still have to go out and make other people laugh. It’s what they do. It’s all they know how to do. It’s in their DNA.

I pray that God gives Ardie the strength! My deepest and sincerest condolences to you Ardie in your terrible loss!

Will Ferrell Hosted SNL | A Heavyweight Homecoming

Will Ferrell is our second to last host of Saturday Night Live to wrap up the season and May sweeps. Right out of the gate, there’s great excitement for this because 1) Ferrell is hilarious in his comfort zone of sketch comedy and 2) Every returning former SNLer this season has killed (see Jimmy Fallon and Maya Rudolph). There will be plenty of drop-ins from other celebs, revival of classic bits and an all over great night.

What we got was something all together different. Let’s check the tape.

COLD OPEN OBAMA VISITS BIDEN
Another really great and strong cold open. It also gave us the chance to revive Ferrell’s Bush impression while being topical he was shoehorned in there a bit but what ex-President wouldn’t be? I love Jason Sudekis’ Joe Biden impression and him flailing around on the bed was hilarious. Tackling the topical issue of Obama’s Biden-induced backing of gay marriage was smart, but for me at the moment I have to say that Veep is doing a much better job at the Vice President jokes right now.

MONOLOGUE
In the immortal words of Mr-T, treat your mother right. No knocking on a man and his mother… except maybe the Jason Vorhees and his mom.

COLD COMMERCIAL
This was a pretty weak commercial parody. In fact, it might be the weakest one we got all year in a year of great commercials.

LGBT PROM
Ugh! I’ve never found The Culps funny like ever and this was just painful. Ana Gasteyer returned, cool. But damn of all the memorable Will Ferrell moments, we got this one? There’s no legal video clip of this online (probably because of song clearances) but don’t bother looking for it, you will just wast your time.

ESPN GOLF
Will Forte is back as well and he’s great! This sketch was not. There were three separate premises going and none of them were funnier for longer than 10 seconds. The writers also pandered just a bit with the constant reaffirmation that it was 1994. Is this show really going down like this?

DIGITAL SHORT: 100th EPISODE
Congrats to the Lonely Island guys for their 100th short, that’s a pretty big accomplishment. Like with many shorts, clip will probably be one of the more buzzed about ones of the evening as it brought back so many characters from the past including rapping celebs and a shirtless, Bieber-humping Jon Hamm. Was it just me or did they not mention Laser Cats in this clip? It’s easily their most tapped well for these shorts. I’m also surprised there was no nod to Lazy Sunday which started the whole phenomenon. Now that the shorts hit 100 episodes are they going to retire?

USHER “SCREAM”
Hey Usher Will Ferrell’s tiger jacket introducing you is more entertaining. But I give you credit for singing and dancing, yet I’m not sure what Hammer Capri pants your backup dancers were rocking.

WEEKEND UPDATE
Weekend Update is strong as usual and I really do like the “Get in the Cage” segments. Liam Neeson is amazing. We are entertained as we usually are with WU.

And here’s a bit with Bobby Moynihan that was cut from the live show. Web exclusive for y’all!

FUNKYTOWN DEBATE
Wow! This sketch was so bad that attractive ladies gyrating to funk music couldn’t save it. What could’ve been a funny idea just became cringe worthy very quickly. Ferrell is great at the absurd characters and this just didn’t work.

BROADWAY SIZZLE
Awful! Nearly 3/4 the way into the show we finally see Bill Hader and it was not worth the wait. This might be the worst sketch all season!

USHER “CLIMAX”
Hi Usher.

ANNIVERSARY PARTY
I usually watch every SNL episode from front to back but in the middle of this sketch I just said “fuck it” and fast forwarded through it. I just couldn’t take it anymore.

COMMERCIAL ALMOST PIZZA
And we’re going out on a commercial from earlier in the year. How ya doin?

Oh man, what happened? I had such high expectations for this episode and wanted to declare this as the return of Will Ferrell but it wasn’t, well anything. I don’t know how it went wrong but it did. Chalk it up to high expectations but Will seemed off over the course of the night and momentum was never caught.

Well, here’s another clip that was cut from the night. I’m going to go lick my wounds until Mick Jagger, The Arcade Fire and Foo Fighters try to cleanse the palate next week.

Television Upfronts 2012: CBS Comedies

CBS is consistently the most viewed network out there. But at the same time, I read on about its shows and for the most part I’m not terribly interested in them. Their comedies are big, multi-camera shows that seem to defy all conventions of buzz or interest yet perform well for years.

Returning
2 Broke Girls - The other sitcom Whitney Cummings is attached to. But this is performing better.

The Big Bang Theory - People hate on this show, I don’t mind it.

How I Met Your Mother - Another season of the longest story being told to children ever. Love the show.

Mike & Molly - I’ve only seen a few minutes of this show but every time I tune in, it’s nothing bur fat jokes. Is this the entire show or do I have really great timing?

Two and a Half Men - I’m betting this show will last forever.

Cancelled
How to Be A Gentleman - This will provide for more chances to see Rickety Cricket return to It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Rob - Phew!

NYC 22 - Not a comedy, but this show featured comedian Robert Kelly who was always good for the comedic break of the show.

On The Bubble
Rules of Engagement

New Pickups
Friend Me - A group of twenty-something best friends who move from Indiana to LA to work at Groupon

Partners - Created by the producers of Will & Grace starring David Kumholtz about two friends who try to figure out their friendship and relationships.

Louis C.K.'s New Old Album "Word" Is Now Available

As you may all know by now, Louis C.K just released his album, WORD: Live at Carnegie Hall by himself on his website. The show was recorded a while back before his Live At The Beacon Theater album.

In an email to his listserve the comedian stated why it took so long for the album to see the light of day.

Okay so there are two new products. They are both audio comedy specials. One is called…Louis CK: WORD - Live at Carnegie Hall. This is about an hour long and it’s a recording of a live standup show that I did at Carnegie Hall in November of 2010 as part of a national tour I was on entitled “WORD” I’ve had a lot of requests from people to release that show as a special or as a CD. I hadn’t done so because a lot of the material that I did on the WORD tour, was in the second season of my show “LOUIE” on FX. But I decided since it’s never been released as an entire show, and some of the material was not on my show, I’m releasing this now. I’m giving you this long and boring explanation because, as most of you know, I release about an hour or more of new standup material every year and folks can count on seeing a new show every year. This is old material, so I don’t want to be a dick and pretend it isn’t.

He also announced that the audio of Beacon was now available, so if you purchased the video, you can get the audio as well. In addition, he negotiated a deal with HBO to release the audio of his first special Shameless. So lotsa Louis C.K. material for you to dig into.

Television Upfronts 2012: ABC Comedies

ABC has a really great crop of sitcoms under its belt and they’ve made some strong moves in the last few seasons to build up a solid Wednesday night comedy block. With renewals with most sitcoms that deserved it, they seem to be in good shape. Their one lingering doubt Cougar Town was jettisoned off to another network (TBS) where it will live on in all its quirky glory.

ABC also renewed a lot of its dramas so its lineup so there’s not a ton of new pickups for comedy.

Returning
Cougar Town - Saved from cancellation and picked up by TBS. It’s good for syndication and fans of show’s creator Bill Lawrence. It’s also really not about cougars, so it should be watched.

Don’t Trust The B—– in Apartment 23 - I’m still undecided about whether I like this show or not. What I do like is the decision to let James Van Der Beek be a hyper version of himself. Last time that was done it kickstarted Neil Patrick Harris’ career. Moved to Tuesday and will be teamed up with Happy Endings.

Happy Endings - Easily the quirkiest and fun cast on Network TV at the moment. This show is what How I Met Your Mother coulda been had it not been CBS-ified. It’s also moving to Tuesday nights without the big Modern Family lead in, but the show is good enough that it hopefully should stand on its own.

Last Man Standing - Good for Tim Allen. He’s gotta be happy right?

The Middle - A strong kick off to the Wednesday night comedy block.

Modern Family - Though I like this show, I do feel like it’s begun to not really go anywhere. Let’s push the boundaries beyond Gloria yells something crazy with an accent and Cam does something Mitchell doesn’t approve of.

Suburgatory - I still don’t like the name, but the show is fun.

Cancelled
Work It - I don’t know how this got on the air in the first place.
Man Up

New Pickups
Malibu Country - A new sitcom starring Reba McEntire. That sitcom pretty much confirms I will not be watching. Unless it’s Keenan’s version of Reba from SNL that is.

The Neighbors - A family move to an upscale suburbs of New Jersey to discover the next door neighbors are actually aliens. Jamie Gertz is set to star. This show is set to premiere after Modern Family, giving it arguably the biggest exposure for a comedy the network can give.

Family Tools - A single-camera comedy that follows a blue collar guy (Kyle Bornheimer) who puts his dreams on hold in order to take over the family handyman business from his dad played by J.K. Simmons. Bornheimer has starred in may pilots and freshman series but none ever seem to make it past the first season. Comedian Johnny Pemberton is also set to star.

How to Live With Your Parents For the Rest of Your Life - A multi-cam comedy starring Sarah Chalke as a newly divorced mother with eccentric parents played by Elizabeth Perkins and Brad Garrett. The parents live life fully and have no boundaries.

Television Upfronts 2012: FOX Comedies

FOX is continuing to support its Animation Domination Sunday nights because if it ain’t broke they why fix it, Amiright? The real problem for them is the ability to launch an animated show that’s not helmed by Seth McFarlane. As of right now, they have hope with Bob’s Burgers. The network scored in the live action comedy with New Girl and with the pickup of some new series could help give them a solid Tuesday comedy block to build off.

FOX had only a few new pickups in the comedy realm since they renewed a large portion of it’s returning series.

Renewals
American Dad - Perhaps the flagship of Sunday night since it’s become funnier than Family Guy.

The Cleveland Show - Was looking dicey for a while but got the renewal.

New Girl - Fox has a great show here that not only draws decent ratings but is buzzworthy and good at developing memorable characters.

Family Guy - Yay Peter.

Glee - But aren’t they all graduating?

Raising Hope - This is the quirky comedy that could.

The Simpsons - There might have been some early on hubub but there was too much money at stake on cancelling this one.

Cancelled
Allen Gregory - Probably for the better.

Breaking In - Second time was not a charm.

I Hate My Teenage Daughter - It’s better this way.

Napoleon Dynamite - This had hope, wished it saw another season.

On The Bubble/Unknown
Bob’s Burgers - Could go either way but hopes are high.

New Pickups
It’s Messy - Probably the most buzzed about new comedy out there which was created by The Office’s Mindy Kaling who is leaving Scranton, PA this season to focus on the executive producing and starring role in Messy as a Bridget Jones-style doctor. BJ Novak starred in the pilot and it appears that Fox plans on putting the show after New Girl potentially making Tuesday night.

Ben & Kate - Centers around a free spirit who, under the guise of being his niece’s nanny, moves in with his type “A,” tightly wound sister The show originally eyed Abbey Elliot of SNL as the role of Kate but has since re-cast her.

The Goodwin Games - From the creators of How I Met Your Mother and avout a dad who leaves his fortune to his three children only if they agree to his terms. The show will star Becki Newton and Scott Foley.

Steve Hofstetter's 5 Reasons To Attend The Devil Festival

Beginning this weekend, the comedy club The Laughing Devil will kick off the week-long stand-up comedy festival Devil Festival where you can catch comedy, attend seminars, and watch someone win $2500 in prize money. We caught up with comedian and director of The Laughing Devil, Steve Hofstetter to give us 5 Reasons you can’t mises Devil Festival.

Reason #5
Gary Gulman. You know how he’s about to film an hour special for Comedy Central? Wouldn’t you love to watch it before it airs? Or even before it films? Get a preview of Gulman’s new hour. Then watch it live when it airs on Comedy Central and ruin all of the punchlines for your friends.

Reason #4
Experience. This isn’t some first time festival. Well, it is - but we’re also the same people behind Trial By Laughter in Indianapolis and the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival in Atlanta. So really, this is the sixth year of the first time festival. Oh, shut up, you know what I mean.

Reason #3
Industry. This festival is crawling with it - network execs, casting directors, reporters - they’re everywhere. EVERYWHERE. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GET THEM OFF ME! Kidding. We love you and are happy you’re a part of this. Thank you for making us famous.

Reason #2
Discovery. You know how you always want to be the one that found an artist first? This festival lets you do that with 100 of the most up and coming up and comers on the scene today. Dave Waite won Laughing Skull and then did Fallon a few weeks later. Just after Skull, Mike Palascak was on Letterman and his special is airing on Comedy Central right now. Come find out who is next.

Reason #1
Rooftop Tent Party. You heard right - we’re throwing post parties every night, including a free-entry poker game with expensive prizes and a rooftop tent party one block from the east river. Yes, there are 22 great shows - but what really makes this festival are the lunches, the seminars, and the parties. Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life - but it’s a hell of a way to spend a week.

Get on out to the Devil Festival kicks off this weekend in Long Island City, NY. Schedule and ticket information can be found at www.devilfestival.com.

Television Upfronts 2012: NBC Comedies

The peacock network is making a lot of moves with it’s comedy programming for the next television season. The biggest being giving the struggling shows on its Thursday night lineup short season re-orders which are allowing allowing many of them to finish their series runs instead of abruptly being cancelled (respect). While at the same time freeing up money so they can pick up a lot of freshman series.

Here’s what’s happening with NBC comedy so far.

Returning
30 Rock - Renewed for 13 episodes in what will be it’s 6th and final season. The last episode will be an hour.

Community - Picked up for 13 episodes yet not declared last season and there’s potential for the full season pickup. But it very well could be the final season if ratings remain where they currently are. The highly publicized feud between showrunner Dan Harmon and Chevy Chase might lead to staff changes. Harmon is not yet signed on for the season and the show has now been moved to Friday where it will follow Whitney.

Parks And Recreation - Picked up for a full season of 22 episodes.

Up All Night - More Will Arnett we say!

Whitney - Good news for a multi-camera sitcom that’s not on CBS. Also, it’s been moved to Friday.

The Office - Renewed. Most of the staff will return yet showrunners will change and they lose Mindy Kaling to her new FOX sitcom.

Cancelled
Bent
Best Friends Forever
Are You There Chelsea?
Free Agents

New Pickups
Next Caller - Just given a last minute order to the Dane Cook starring show. A single-camera comedy focusing on a cocky alpha male satellite radio DJ (Cook) and his feminist co-host (Collette Wolfe). Jeffrey Tambor will co-host.

Guys With Kids - Produced by Jimmy Fallon and starring Anthony Anderson, Jesse Bradford, and Zach Cregger as three 30-something guys who enjoy the adventures of parenting despite the fact they haven’t grown up themselves. Rounding out the ensemble are Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Sara Rue, and Tempestt Bledsoe.

Save Me - A single camera comedy starring Anne Heche as a woman who lets herself and her marriage go until she undergoes an “awakening” transforming her into a desirable and outspoken woman who just might be channeling God.

Go On - Single camera comedy starring Matthew Perry as a charming sportscaster who tries to move on from loss through mandatory group therapy.

Animal Practice - A workplace comedy starring Justin Kirk as a House-like veterinarian. Tyler Labine, Bobby Lee and Amy Huberman co-star.

The New Normal - A comedy about a blended family. Andrew Rannells and Justin Bartha are a gay couple that meet a cash-strapped waitress/mother who becomes their surrogate.

1600 Penn - A dysfunctional first family living in the White House. Josh Gad co-created the show with Jon Lovett, starring Bill Pullman, Jenna Elfman and Martha MacIsaac co-star.

Via TV Line, Deadline, and Warming Glow

It also appears NBC passed on the earlier buzzed about Roseanne Barr and Sarah Silverman pilots.

Kelly Carlin Talks "Companion" As We Near Her Father's Birthday

Writer, producer, podcaster and SiriusXM radio host Kelly Carlin may have been first-hand witness to her famous father’s “early days as a straight comic through his transformation into a counter culture hero and iconoclastic social commentator,” but her own path to adulthood and enlightenment has been just as tumultuous.

Directed by Paul Provenza (The Aristocrats, Showtime’s The Green Room with Paul Provenza), her second one-woman show, A Carlin Home Companion: Growing Up with George, is a touching telling of their shared story, and has earned raves on both the festival circuit and at its monthly run at the Santa Monica Playhouse. While the next show is May 24th, May 12th marks what would have been George’s 75th birthday. To celebrate her father’s birthday, Kelly will host a night of comedy on May 17th.

How long have you been working on the show, and how has it evolved over time?

The very first time I did it was on a cruise ship. Lewis Black had invited me to come on “Lew’s Cruise” with himself and seven stand-ups and 400 of his fans. He needed some day activities for the fans so I said I’d play a few videos of my dad and tell some family stories. I made the whole thing up on the spot. That was November 2010. In March of 2011, I found out I was going to JFL [Montreal’s Just For Laughs comedy festival] and thought, “Oh, shit, now I have to write this thing.” I began developing it. At JFL it was about seventy percent of what it is today. I was on book for two-thirds of it, there was a ton of stuff in that we ended up cutting, and we hadn’t really found out a through-line yet.

How does A Carlin Home Companion compare to your previous one-woman show, Driven to Distraction?

Driven to Distraction was about how my mother’s death in 1997 had led to a spiritual awakening in my life and showed me how so much of our lives [is] about distracting us from the fear of death. This show is more focused on how my father’s professional and personal choices affected myself and our family, and then how I took that experience into my adult life and had to heal and find a new way to be with it all. This show is also very multimedia, with lots of clips from my dad’s HBO shows and family photos.

A Carlin Home Companion has already appeared at Montreal’s Just For Laughs comedy festival last summer and most recently at SXSW in March. What do you envision as the final manifestation of the project? Broadway? Documentary? Other?

Until last December, it was a work in progress. And in some ways it will always be one. But as it is now, script is locked, and I am learning more and more each time about performing it. Broadway? That would be lovely. A doc? Who knows.

How has Paul Provenza’s direction helped shape the show?

Paul has been a godsend. Not only does he have impeccable comedic taste, but he is unafraid of the dark stuff. Being someone who was deeply influenced by my father, he has been able to help sort through how my dad’s comedic material parallels and juxtaposes against my personal stories. Being an actor in his own right, he has helped me to find my way into my own acting. Being a person who suffers no fools or bullshit, he has helped me keep the material poignant but not saccharine, deep but not self-indulgent. He has been invaluable to me. I can’t imagine having done this without him.

What have audiences found to be the most surprising revelations about George that emerged from the show?

I guess that they see a man who didn’t always have the answers, was searching like everyone else. His humanity.

Have any of your memories or experiences remained too painful or otherwise private to share?

Of course. And yet there is nothing not in this piece that would be surprising. Just more moments of human confusion and such. Doing a show like this, you leave in what supports the narrative that has been revealed to you, and you leave out what is extraneous. It’s like any kind of storytelling, it’s just that the material is your own life.

In February you began hosting The Kelly Carlin Show monthly on SiriusXM’s Raw Dog channel. You also host your Waking From the American Dream pocast via the Smodcast network. What have satellite radio and podcasts brought to the comedy landscape that performers from George’s generation never got to utilize?

Podcasts have given folks access to audience without gatekeepers. Of course, this isn’t always a good thing. Some people attempt them and it’s clear they have no idea what they are doing. But the great ones like Marc Maron’s WTF, Greg Fitzsimmons’s Fitzdog Radio, and Greg Proops are wonderful. I started doing Waking From the American Dream because I wanted to have conversations with people who I feel live outside, or think outside the cookie cutter American mainstream world. I feel very lucky that people enjoy what I bring to the table. As far as satellite radio, there is a lot more comedy getting to be played hour after hour, and that is a good thing for comics and people who like to laugh.

In your mind, what is George’s greatest lasting legacy?

For the world, it will most likely be “The Seven Dirty Words,” which is too bad because that is such a small part of who he was and what he did. In my mind, it is many things: fearless truth-teller on stage, whimsical goofy observer of small human moments and deep critical thinker. Oh, and he was a great dad.

Video: Stephen Colbert Pays Tribute To Maurice Sendak

Stephen Colbert has done some pretty amazing interviews over the years. One of the best in recent memory are with children’s book author Maurice Sendak. It showed the old man side of Sendak that is quick with the wit and not really scared of speaking his mind.

Yesterday when news broke of Sendak’s passing those interviews were the first we thought of. It was also the same day that Colbert released his own children’s book

that came from the Sendak interviews.

Last night we waited for Colbert to mention the legendary author on The Colbert Report and sure enough he did.

Jon Hamm and Reggie Watts Should Start a Band

Jon Hamm is a guest on the upcoming comedy-podcast-turned-comedy-TV-show Comedy Bang Bang. In this clip Hamm drops an impromptu rap about the TV show Taxi. So it got pretty meta in that place pretty damn quick.

Watts looped a beat and Hamm freestyles lines like “Louie’s there, Bobby’s there, Elaine, Tony Danza’s there. Also in attendece: Latka, played by Andy Kaufman.” Then we get a pretty great Christopher Lloyd impression from Hamm effectively making it very difficult for anyone else to win the internet this week.

Comedy Bang Bang premieres on June 8th on IFC and Reggie Watts’ will release a new TV special and CD/DVD A Live At Central Park on May 15th.

Video of an Un-Aired Beastie Boys Performance on Chappelle's Show Surfaces

Even a few days later the shitty news of Beastie Boys’ member Adam “MCA” Yauch’s passing stings. Fuck cancer, really.

In 2004, Yauch and the rest of the Beastie Boys performed their song “The New Style” for what would have been the third season of Chappelle’s Show. They all loaded onto a boat that traveled up the East River of NYC. The clip never aired because of the now infamous way Dave Chappelle ended Chappelle Show and subsequent cancellation of a third season of the show.

Yesterday, Chappelle Show’s co-creator Neal Brennan posted the clip on his YouTube page for the first time with the statement, “Rest in Peace, Adam Yauch. You were excellent.”

The clip with the group on a boat, in New York, with Dave Chappelle, is too damn perfect.

Eli Manning Hosted SNL: Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better

Saturday Night Live is back with its final run of May shows for sweeps that will wrap season 37. The first of them is NY Giants quarterback Eli Manning. When Manning was picked to host the night there were mixed responses around the water cooler. Manning isn’t known to have the most hilarious of personalities but when his older brother Peyton Manning hosted back in 2007 it ended up a welcomed surprise with his ability to make fun of himself and injection of even a bit of physical comedy.

So once again, Eli’s performance would be compared to his older brother’s. But as the line in the song goes “anything you can do I can do better,” something he proved with more Super Bowl rings and the world’s most perfect Wikipedia picture. Eli is the quieter Manning brother but just as talented.

Will he be able to do the same on live television? Let’s check the tape.

COLD OPEN: FOX & FRIENDS
SNL’s writers have finally gotten the tone of this year’s political election. While they’ve struggled with Mitt Romney thus far, they caught the outrageous-ness how FOX News’ morning show Fox & Friends and discussed politics. I also enjoyed seeing Taran, Vanessa, and Bobby handle the cold open. These three are definitely my picks for cast members that will carry the show if there are departures from the older members at the end of the season. And if you recorded the show, replay the corrections; you will learn that yellow and blue make green, not “blellow.”

MONOLOGUE
The monologue was an attempt to show New Orleans-born Manning is now a true New Yorker. He knows the best neighborhoods and where the best slice is. However, his “fuggedaboutit” needs some work.

AMAZON MOTHER’S DAY
The ads this season have been terrific and this is another one to add to the long list of greats. Topping it all with a Joel McHale picture on the dryer.

MOTION CAPTURE
Manning’s first sketch of the night puts him in tight spandex doing motion capture for the a video game. And what’s funnier than seeing people in the funky outfits? What sold this bit was watching Jason Sudekis smirk himself through as he interacted with Bill Hader. The two hit a grove that spilled into a few other sketches throughout the night as Sudekis appeared in many of the night’s best sketches. Eli Tebowing will probably make all the highlight reels but the bigger laughs came from his grenade throwing and sandwich eating.

TEXT MESSAGES EVIDENCE
This sketch plays on all our fears living with modern technology. At least mine, because if my stupid texts were ever put on a public record I would imagine many people would be left wondering what the hell was wrong with me. Eli leaning into the mic for effect every time was a nice touch as was having Hader as the judge to interact with Sudekis.

LITTLE BROTHERS
Here it is! The moment we hoped would come. Peyton’s now classic United Way clip will be tough to beat but Eli tries for all the little brothers out there. There’s even a nice nod to older bro using Andy Samberg and a trunk of a car. This sketch was hilarious, however knowing where it was headed from the beginning removed the element of surprise just a bit. Advantage Peyton by just a hair.

HERB WELCH: OCCUPY MOVEMENT
I’m a fan of Bill Hader’s Herb Welch character even though it’s the same gag of smacking youngsters with a microphone, saying inappropriate things, then faking a death. But Hader sells it every time and it makes me chuckle still.

RIHANNA “TALK THAT TALK”
If you like Rihanna, then this was probably an awesome performance to witness. If you don’t, you’re probably trying to figure out the spider web metaphor. I personally am trying to figure out how to not constantly misspell her name every time I type it.

It was also at this moment where the show payed a brief tribute to lifelong New Yorker Adam “MCA” Yauch of the Beastie Boys. Yep, it’s news that still sucks.

WEEKEND UPDATE
Weekend Update was strong as usual. Though attempting to make the NJ tanning mother Patricia Krentcil more outrageous than her real-life maroon over tanned skin and weird declarations on the camera is a tall order. But what’s not a tall order is having Sacha Baron Cohen stop by in character as Admiral General Aladeen from The Dictator. Hey Aladeen, leave Marty Scorsese alone!

WHAT IS THIS?
This might be the final sketch of the night that had any umph or completion to it even though it wasn’t much. The second half of the show was not as strong as the first and I would say this sketch was where things turned.

HELGA LATELY
I disliked everything about this sketch. Four minutes of everyone speaking like the Swedish Chef just didn’t keep any sort of momentum. There was also a natural spot where it coulda ended post Kardashian commercial but then it didn’t. I do want to see more of Kate McKinnon.

RIHANNA “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN”
We meet again Rihanna and your name I have trouble spelling.

MISS DRAG WORLD
This sketch could have worked had the only gag not been “let’s put a pro NFL player in drag.” Eli gets credit in my book for getting dolled up. but he was all dressed up with nowhere to go in this sketch. Bobby Moynihan in drag does make me chuckle more than it should as does the line “junk fell out twice” in the context it was in.

TCM COMEDY CHEECH AND CHONG
Hey look it’s a third member of Cheech and Chong! Yeah, I didn’t find it really funny either.

And that’s it for the show folks. Sometimes when the snow has mega stars hosting, they aren’t willing to mock themselves and Manning dove in completely - from mocking his NY knowledge, to wearing a silly motion capture suits and even going drag, he didn’t appear to be worried about anything else other than trying to make people laugh. Therefore the verdict is a great one for Eli. Though I wouldn’t expect him to become a regular with the hosting duties, it’s never a bad thing when a New Yorker can take the reins for such an iconic New York show.

Good on ya Eli!

The Black Keys Will Guest Star On Workaholics

We’re completely excited about the new season of Workaholics premiering at the end of this month. Their house party at SXSW was, as they’d put it… a tight butthole.

Now it’s also been revealed that the rock duo, The Black Keys will make a guest starring appearance on the show.

While in small claims court, the guys cross paths with two dirtbags, played by Auerbach and Carney, who are waiting for their own case to be heard. It should be noted that the duo will be sporting oddly long ponytails. [EW]

The rock duo are apparently big fans of the show and signed on to appear basically because they are fans. S’Go!

Stand-Up Clip of The Day: Lynn Koplitz on Men Doing Nothing

You may recognize Lynn Koplitz from commercials or the excellent IFC show Z-Rock. Here’s a jag she has about men and their laziness. As a man, I have to say I agree with her that women can’t comprehend a man’s desire to “do nothing” sometimes.

Video: Russell Brand Talks To Parliament About Drug Addiction

Russell Brand recently went before MPs (Members of Parliament) to discuss the Home Affairs Selection Committee about drug addiction. In the clip, Brand goes on at length as to how addiction should be treated as a disease instead of a crime. While doing so he recalled many of his past battles with heroin addiction and the crimes he committed in the name of it.

Good on ya Russ, maybe next time you could at least wear a shirt that has sleeves.

You can check out the whole 30 minute speech here.

Wainy Days LIVE: A Belated DVD Release Party

In honor of the recent release of My Damn Channel’s hit web series Wainy Days on DVD, the UCBeast hosted an evening filled with Wainy-themed entertainment. The show opened with David Wain singing along to the Wainy Days theme, accompanied by Fred Armisen on drums and Jon Spurney on keyboard. The night was full of comedy fun times, including interviews, mad libs, and tons of music - plenty of haha’s were had.

Wain interviewed two comedy greats, the first being musician/funny man Fred Armisen. They talked about their careers as drummers, choosing ideas for SNL or Portlandia, and Armisen’s instructional drumming DVD, which is full of lies. Later in the evening, comedienne Janeane Garofalo took the stage for a chitchat with David. They discussed her career, some truths about cats and dogs, and [Fake Spoiler Alert:] the death of her character in the Wet Hot American Summer sequel or prequel or does it really matter what it is because I’m going to see it no matter what?

I learned a lot of lessons at the show, such as the fact that David wrote the first, unproduced episode of Wainy Days in middle school. He brought up comedians Matt Ballard, Michelle Federer, and wife Zandy Hartig to do a stage reading along with Armisen and Garofalo. The performance was full of heart, passion, and boner talk. It was erection-lent!

As the UCB’s screen lowered to show Wainy Days Episode 14: The Pact and Wainy Days Episode 6: A Woman’s Touch, Amy Miles sang a beautiful tune set to the Keyboard Cat song. Every time the slow-moving screen went up and down Miles sang verses like, “there goes the screen” and “it gives us time to reflect on what we’re doing with our lives.” I myself was completely fine with what I was doing with my life at that exact moment.

The night ended with a live performance of the two-part musical episode Rochelle. Wain had the opportunity to show off his drumming abilities and his ability to dry hump hard enough to finish without losing any clothing, hence it’s not cheating. By the end of the episode a decision needed to be made. Does David choose Rochelle or Jeannie? The answer is: I’m not going to tell you so you should probably just go watch the episodes.

If anyone knows how to “Make it Wain,” it’s David, and he made it Wain laughter all night long.

Louis C.K., Bridesmaids Big Winners At The 2012 Comedy Awards

The second annual Comedy Awards were taped at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC on Saturday night with Tina Fey, Jim Carrey, Kristen Wiig, Robert De Niro and many more in attendance as The Roots provided backing band-ed ness throughout the night.

Warning, if you don’t like spoilers, don’t read on.

The Awards consisted of Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo wrestling for an award, bitter Indians, a weekend update with Chevy Chase, Colin Quinn, and Norm MacDonald, ghost pepper eating, and many other surprises.

The stars of the hit movie Bridesmaids owned the night winning four of the night’s top awards but hey, what do you expect from a movie that stars nearly every top current female comedian. Louis C.K. also became familiar with accepting awards and stated he was not embarrassed after winning three awards because it was awesome, but by the time he received his fourth he said “This is stupid now, I hate this!” and then just walked off of the stage. The biggest upset of the night had to have been Archer beating out South Park, and The Simpsons for “Best Animated Comedy Series.” Although it was well deserved, the crowd seemed very surprised.

Although Bridesmaids and C.K. made their presence known, the night belonged to Robin Williams and comic legend, Don Rickles. Williams received the “Stand-Up Icon Award” and stated “I am one of the luckiest fucks in show business, with the possible exception of Ryan Seacrest.” Williams then went on to say “The only difference between me and a leprechaun is that I snorted my pot of gold!” Don Rickles was presented the well-deserved Johnny Carson Award by Jon Stewart where Jon said it best: “People love Don Rickles, but comics revere Don Rickles. He’s the first guy to come out and go, ‘What’s so special about you people?’ He turned it around and showed comics we could fight back.” Rickles made joked about his accolade saying “I see many people in the audience tonight, and I realize: I’m the biggest name here!”

Below is the complete list of winners, so go and see if you can find anyone dumb enough to place bets before it airs on Sunday, May 6th on Comedy Central.

Reggie Watts "A Live At Central Park" CD/DVD Coming on May 15th

Good news fans of all that is Reggie Watts for he announced his plans for his new comedy special. Last summer Watts set up shop in NYC’s Central Park and taped a set for Comedy Central that will be released as a joint CD/DVD called A Live At Central Park. The special features Watts’ trademark humor and stream-of-consciousness songs and will hit stores on Tuesday, May 15th.

It will also air on Comedy Central on the 11th at 1am. We can only assume since it’s airing that late on the channel it means the special will be part of the network’s Secret Stash and we’ll get to hear Reggie in all his curse-filled glory!

And that’s a great sign since the first video clip released from the special is something you don’t want to play at work.
