Louis C.K., Bridesmaids Big Winners At The 2012 Comedy Awards

The second annual Comedy Awards were taped at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC on Saturday night with Tina Fey, Jim Carrey, Kristen Wiig, Robert De Niro and many more in attendance as The Roots provided backing band-ed ness throughout the night.

Warning, if you don’t like spoilers, don’t read on.

The Awards consisted of Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo wrestling for an award, bitter Indians, a weekend update with Chevy Chase, Colin Quinn, and Norm MacDonald, ghost pepper eating, and many other surprises.

The stars of the hit movie Bridesmaids owned the night winning four of the night’s top awards but hey, what do you expect from a movie that stars nearly every top current female comedian. Louis C.K. also became familiar with accepting awards and stated he was not embarrassed after winning three awards because it was awesome, but by the time he received his fourth he said “This is stupid now, I hate this!” and then just walked off of the stage. The biggest upset of the night had to have been Archer beating out South Park, and The Simpsons for “Best Animated Comedy Series.” Although it was well deserved, the crowd seemed very surprised.

Although Bridesmaids and C.K. made their presence known, the night belonged to Robin Williams and comic legend, Don Rickles. Williams received the “Stand-Up Icon Award” and stated “I am one of the luckiest fucks in show business, with the possible exception of Ryan Seacrest.” Williams then went on to say “The only difference between me and a leprechaun is that I snorted my pot of gold!” Don Rickles was presented the well-deserved Johnny Carson Award by Jon Stewart where Jon said it best: “People love Don Rickles, but comics revere Don Rickles. He’s the first guy to come out and go, ‘What’s so special about you people?’ He turned it around and showed comics we could fight back.” Rickles made joked about his accolade saying “I see many people in the audience tonight, and I realize: I’m the biggest name here!”

Below is the complete list of winners, so go and see if you can find anyone dumb enough to place bets before it airs on Sunday, May 6th on Comedy Central.

Reggie Watts "A Live At Central Park" CD/DVD Coming on May 15th

Good news fans of all that is Reggie Watts for he announced his plans for his new comedy special. Last summer Watts set up shop in NYC’s Central Park and taped a set for Comedy Central that will be released as a joint CD/DVD called A Live At Central Park. The special features Watts’ trademark humor and stream-of-consciousness songs and will hit stores on Tuesday, May 15th.

It will also air on Comedy Central on the 11th at 1am. We can only assume since it’s airing that late on the channel it means the special will be part of the network’s Secret Stash and we’ll get to hear Reggie in all his curse-filled glory!

And that’s a great sign since the first video clip released from the special is something you don’t want to play at work.

Want to Watch Jimmy Fallon Audition For Saturday Night Live?

In the last few days a video clip of Jimmy Fallon auditioning for Saturday Night Live. Jimmy’s looking very young in the clip as he runs through the gamut of his impressions. Possibly gathering the biggest laughs from when he drops his Adam Sandler impression on the crowd.

We’re assuming this clip is from around 1998 since that’s the year he first showed up as a featured player on SNL. We also think he has more than a passing resemblance to Ted Mosby in this clip.

5 Reasons To Watch "Money From Strangers" With Jeff Dye

On his new TV show Money From Strangers, comedian Jeff Dye wants to give you cash, but there’s a catch, you really have to work for it. Dye finds people on the street and offers them the chance to play the game. The willing participant then gets an earbud from Dye who watches on hidden cameras with other comedian friends (I spotted Joe Mande, Kurt Braunohler, Ali Wong, Moshe Kasher, Streeter Seidell, Jordan Carlos, and Eric Andre in the trailer) who tell their pawn to do and say things around the city that earn them money. Buffoonery at it’s finest!

We caught up with Dye and asked him to give us 5 Reasons we should watch Money From Strangers. Let ‘er rip Jeff.

Reason #5
New York City. This isn’t some fake Hollywood show where we stage crap. This is actual strangers pranking other actual strangers in a town that will hit you with a lead pipe before assuming they’re on a TV show.

Reason #4
Comedians!!!! You don’t see enough stand up/sketch/improv comics on TV anymore. In the reality show age it’s all socialites running around on our TV. This show brings the BEST comics you may have or haven’t heard of. People who’s only agenda is funny! No celebs just for the sake of star power, just FUNNY people.

Reason #3
Edgy and fun. There are pranks for everyone. We definitely push the limits with some pranks but there are plenty of nerdy reference pranks, cerebral pranks/jokes, immature, silly, and everything in between. Everyone will laugh at something on this show!

Reason #2
The President of MTV doesn’t want to watch a creep in a van mess with strangers.

Reason #1
MEEEEE, finally the world will get to see how weird and fun my comedy is. Also I’m very sociopathic so why wouldn’t I say myself.

Money from Strangers premieres on Monday April 30th at 10:30pm ET on MTV. Tune in!

Review: Lisa Lampanelli "Equal Opportunity Offender"

If you’ve heard Lisa Lampanelli’s comedy before, or consider yourself a diehard fan, you know what you are in for before listening to her greatest hits collection, Equal Opportunity Offender.
It’s also why this album is not for you.

If you are one who whines every time they see a greatest hits album, then stop reading this right now, this album is not for you.

But if you’ve happened to surf upon this review because you searched for Lampanelli after seeing her on The Celebrity Apprentice, then by all means pay attention.

First off, yes greatest hits albums can be tricky. Other than say Jazz, I’d reckon stand-up comedy is the toughest recorded material to make appear cohesive when compiling. In both instances, they are about a vibe and a feeling set over an album span, not track to track. It’s an art often ignored by the disposable pop music that litter the 2,367th incarnations of Now That’s What I Call Music compilations.

However, in Lampanelli’s case, a greatest hits makes perfect sense at this stage in her career. She’s earned the right to release every special she’s had, consistently delivering with every live set, morning show appearance, and celebrity roast she’s done. She’s taking the next step in her career with an upcoming one-woman show on Broadway and her current run on NBC’s The Celebrity Apprentice. This album allows those that just joined Lisa to jump back into her catalog and find out where she came from.

Lampanelli is a great joke writer who often gets Don Rickles comparisons for her brand of “insult comedy” which attempts to shock with words and slaughter sacred cows like race, religion, and sexuality. She’s not worried about what she can’t say, she just says it. It’s in good fun and those that don’t realize this probably take themselves too seriously anyway.

Since the Lampanelii hasn’t done much to change up her joke subject matter, the material does lend itself well to a greatest hits because it’s minimal on references to earlier moments in the set (except for maybe her single vs. married status). Therefore, something from Lampanelli’s first album does sound well next to her fourth. However, her latter material does a better job of highlighting her phenomenal roast work. This platform served her well and attributed much to her success, so featuring it heavily on a greatest hits compilation just makes sense.

Bottom line, Equal Opportunity Offender is going to be the album you tell a friend to check out if they want to hear jokes from that comedy lady they saw on The Celebrity Apprentice. It’s her Wikipedia page of sorts; not her entire character but it will give you the idea of the person after investing just a few minutes. If you like what you hear, do yourself the favor and take the deeper dive.

Warning: New Tenacious D Album May Cause Extreme Tinnitus

Yesterday, Rolling Stone’s website premiered a promo video for Tenacious D’s new album Rize of the Fenix. The clip features Mr. Show’s comedian Bob Odenkirk (as Dr. Bill Teetz) and ex-Quiet Riot/Ozzy bassist Rudy Sarzo showing how the D’s new album can cause extreme tinnitus on behalf of The Tinnitus Institute. Not only is the video pretty funny, but it also features a few samples of new tracks off Rize of the Fenix, which comes out on May 15th.

So check out the promo clip for yourself above, and “learn” of the hazards that come with tinnitus.

Alternative To Sleeping Interview With David Liebe Hart

I had the chance to speak with David Liebe Hart (from Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! and various other Tim and Eric-related projects) last Thursday on my show, Alternative to Sleeping. The main focus of the conversation was about his Kickstarter campaign, where he’s trying to raise money to record a punk album.

David went into great detail about some recent tragedies, including the death of his sister and a fire in his kitchen the week before Christmas. Also, Tim and Eric won’t give him one of his puppets back if he doesn’t give them $500.

As part of his Kickstarter, rewards for donating include autographs, commissioned songs and drawings, and for $500, he will, “come to your house and perform for you and your friends.”

For a mere $60, you can have some of his old clothes…including some of his old underwear. “But it wouldn’t be as a sexual thing, it would be for them to have as a sentimental thing. I’m trying to set a good example for our youth.”

On his Tumblr page, David has a few videos where he’s performing his new punk songs, including, “La Rent Doesn’t Want Me To Look At Porn.”

He welcomes people to commission him to do a painting or a drawing for them, and if you bring him a used computer, one that is a 2009, 2010, or 2011, and preferably, “an Apple or something that is a good quality computer,” he will give you 10 different autographed albums and 10 different autographed pictures.

Among other things, he’s upset that Tim and Eric have not called him about season 3 of “Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule,” despite being promised, and that it, “was very cheap and rude of (his) uncle Danny,” for saying that he was begging by asking for help.

Listen to the full interview here.

Video: Jimmy Fallon Slow Jams The News With President Obama

Jimmy Fallon might have had his “Arsenio moment” with President Obama last night on his late night talk show. Obama, who is no stranger to showing up on talk shows to discuss policy dropped by Fallon’s show to rally the youth vote and discuss his stance against congress’ desire to raise student loan rates. And what better way to reach the youth of today than to talk policy in a fashion that young people would be willing to smirk at and share the video with their friends.

Bring on the POTUS slow-jamming the news with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots. I think after this, Jimmy can officially get any celeb/person of power to do anything on his show.

And here’s the clip of Fallon talking to the Pres.

Galifianakis, Bateman, Arnett and Apatow Search For Manliness

There’s a new documentary that’s about to hit theaters that’s all about being a man. It’s executive produced by the brothers Bluth Will Arnett and Jason Batemen along with documentation himself, Morgan Spurlock.

Mansome sets out to answer the question to what it means to be many and have a beard. The trailer features a slew of great comedians including Judd Apatow and Adam Carolla. But perhaps the best definition of manliness is left up to Zach Galifianakis.

Take it away Zach…

And of course a documentary about Manliness must include the Old Spice guy.

9 Comedians And Jokes About Weed

Next to bad airplane food and male/female driving habits, marijuana might be a comic’s favorite topic.

We figured since today is 4/20, the day when Mary Jane (for those with a prescription of course) is celebrated the most, we would set you up with some of our favorite comic’s stories and ruminations on the wonder herb.

DOUG BENSON
Can you call it a Marijuana list without Doug Benson on it? Cliched of course, but close your eyes and have Benson NOT be the first comedian that pops into your head when I utter the words “pot smoking comic.”

JIM BREUER
Okay okay, Jim Breuer might be another comedian’s name that pops into your head when I mention the above phrase. Breuer does have the look of “perpetual stoner” and well, he’s been known to joke about it time to time.

BILL HICKS
Bill Hicks has never pulled any punches when it comes to pointing out the hypocrisy of this nation’s drug policies. He’s also mined pot for some seriously thought-provoking and hilarious opinions about it’s use.

JOE ROGAN
Like Bill Hicks, Joe Rogan has tons of liberal thoughts of Marijuana and is definitely someone who uses drugs to expand his mind rather than just have a great Saturday night. In fact a large portion of his stand-up material revolves around discussions about expanding his horizons through psychedelics.

MITCH HEDBERG
A post celebrating Mitch Hedberg and drugs definitely whitewashes the larger fact that he died from an overdose but that’s for another post and another time. For the sake of this post, Mitch was a comedian that walked and breathed the stoner look and attitude, and he had some terrific jokes about the bud. RIP Mitch, we miss you.

DAVE CHAPPELLE
Yeah, Dave Chappelle has to be on this list doesn’t he? I mean of all the comedians on this list, how many of them wrote an entire movie based on his love for weed? that’s what I thought.

NICK SWARDSON
Because, shit! Grandma’s Boy quotes are still being tossed around this office on a consistent basis.

KATT WILLIAMS
Katt Williams might be the smallest comedian on this list, but dammit if he doesn’t have some big theories on smoking weed.

CHEECH & CHONG
When it comes to pot-related humor, Cheech & Chong not only created the genre, they’ve been carrying it’s torch for the last 40 years. So I guess prolonged smoke inhalation could preserve the human body?

Louis C.K., Colbert, Wiig, and Handler Amongst the Time 100

Time Magazine has released it’s Time 100. An annual list of whom they consider the most influential people in the world. Most of this list is stacked with political figures, activists, athletes, hosts, and other luminaries of pop culture. Time then asks a fellow celeb friend or admirer to discuss those selected.

For the 2012 list, Time selected 4 comedic minds - Louis C.K., Kristen Wiig, Stephen Colbert, and Chelsea Handler. Here’s what their admirers had to say about them.

Louis C.K. “He’s Steven Spielberg without the beard and with humor… No one can learn how to be funny. What you can learn is how to trust yourself, to have enough self-confidence to say, “I think this is funny — they will too.” Louis gets that. There’s no downside to him. He’s the next Big One.” - Joan Rivers

Kristen Wiig - “I remember seeing Kristen Wiig on her first episode of Saturday Night Live. I don’t remember the sketch, I just remember her. She was so confident and funny right out of the gate. You would have thought she had been on the show for years. She was instantly one of my all-time favorite cast members.” - Judd Apatow

Stephen Colbert - “On The Colbert Report, every day is Opposite Day. Because of how his humor works, the audience finds meaning through sustained inference, which is a lot more fun than it sounds. Colbert’s riffs are so ingeniously convoluted and deeply weird that the post-reason wingers have no response to him. They just have to absorb the punishment, night after night.” Gary Trudeau

Chelsea Handler - “Few women in comedy have gotten the attention and respect of the Establishment. Chelsea has, while being raw, hilarious and unafraid to cross the line — and take it from me, that combination doesn’t always go over. And Seacrest, if you’re reading this, remember: it won’t be long before Chelsea can buy and sell you.” - Kathy Griffin

You can read the full list here.

Video: Bill Plympton's Animated Intro To The Simpsons

Coming off the success of Banksy’s animation of the intro last season, The Simpsons asked another famous artist to animate their intro. Last night, Bill Plympton was tapped to handle the intro duties in the bit called “Beware My Cheating Bart.” In it Homer falls in love with the trusty couch, something that most men would find entirely plausible.

Josh Brolin Hosted Saturday Night Live: Some Host, Many Songs

Ho hum, I think I’m going to lazily review this episode of SNL because it seems that’s how the show was put together. Josh Brolin returned for his second hosting duties to let the world know that he’s back with another Man In Black movie. The thing is, I’m not sure if the show was a success, nor am I sure if Brolin actually hosted the night. For the most part, Brolin was reserved to secondary characters and never actually handled the lead in any sketch. I wouldn’t say Brolin disappeared but he did manage to really blend into the ensemble.

Let’s check the tape.

COLD OPEN: THIS CAMPAIGN WAS THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE
As the cold open began I had fingers crossed and repeated, “Please not another Mitt Romney open. Please not another Mitt Romney open.” Then boom! we got ourselves good ol’ Mitt. But this one was different, because it did the smart move of taking the focus off Romney and put it on the rest of the insane characters that ran for the Republican nomination. They all sing along to Green Day’s “Time Of Your Life” and it appears the song wasn’t cleared for video, ho hum. The rumor also circulated that Lorne Michaels asked Romney to host an upcoming episode of the show, this idea gives me headaches.

MONOLOGUE
Brolin’s monologue was simple enough, get on out there and tell us he’s returned and ready to hock wares for MIB 3, and who better to help him out than Jay Pharaoh as Will Smith? I’m also pretty sure this is the most of Brolin we saw all night.

GAME OF THRONES BEHIND THE SCENES
This behind the scenes documentary of the HBO breakout show Game Of Thrones was pretty hilarious. The show is chock full of naked women so of course a thirteen year old might have a part in creating said nude scenes for the show. And to then hail such child a genius provides for some laugh out loud moments. In fact, revealing that a thirteen year old person was behind the show’s gratuitous nude scenes explains a lot. I guess HBO didn’t want to clear all the boob parts so we have no legit clip of this one either. But you can watch it here.

THE CALIFORNIANS
This Californians sketch was a bit too long in my opinion and coulda been just as effective in half the time. I do believe it’s pretty accurate as to just how much everyone on the coast talks about freeways. This sketch was saved because of the character breaking of Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig from Fred Armisen’s ridiculous.

SONG PARODY COMPETITION
Hey! Remember that time when we hired Jay Pharaoh because he could do all those awesome impressions? Well his Jay-Z impression is pretty spot-on so let’s do that and surround it with the premise of that song he did with Alicia Keys! Yeah that’s the ticket. Oh and let’s toss in “Weird Al” Yankovic for good measure. Not to wardrobe, Al hasn’t worn glasses in a decade easily. Here’s another clip that used music NBC couldn’t get cleared so I leave it up to you to imagine a bunch of people singing parody songs of “Empire State of Mind.”

DIGITAL SHORT LASER CATS 7
We have ourselves a Digital Short and it’s the recurring Laser Cats (7 really?) but the fun in this sketch is that it’s so ridiculous that getting others involved make it fun. Steven Spielberg dropping in for some self-parody definitely elevates the sketch from “mildly amusing” to “woah, good get for you guys.” Lorne, you are such a great liar.

GOTYE “SOMEBODY THAT UI USED TO KNOW”
I’m kinda shocked that this Gotye song is so big. His video alone has over 160 million hits on Youtube and the song is pretty much played ever 10 minutes on the radio considering it takes over a minute to get to the hook of the song. But here we are, watching the slinky dude belt it out. Also, if you haven’t watch the official music video for this song, do so now. It will help with a joke later in the episode.

WEEKEND UPDATE
Even Weekend Update wasn’t that strong this week around. Probably because it used Garth and Kat, which could quite possibly be my least favorite guests on the show.

PIERS MORGAN TONIGHT: TREYVON MARTIN
Piers Morgan makes another appearance as Taran Killam got a good workout this episode. Though the topic they were covering this sketch (Treyvon Martin) wasn’t that funny this did net a great line delivered by Nasim Pedrad’s Kim Kardashian as being a zero threat. There was an Ice-T Law & Order moment where I almost hoped took advantage of writer John Mulaney’s obsession with the show. Maybe just one “you mean like”. I also chuckled when Madonna’s Super Bowl tightrope walker made a return appearance.

WOODBRIDGE HIGH
Did you know there is a school where you can walk down a hallway in slow motion and live out any high school slo-mo walk scene desires? It was a funny concept that and got out as fast as it got in, so I would say it worked for me because of the speed in which the clip ended. It’s also a clip that included another non-cleared song “We Got More Bounce In California” by Soul Kid #1 so we have no clip of this. Which is weird because having this clip around the web coulda helped boost the sales for a song that’s over 5 years old.

DIGITAL SHORT #2: GOTYE BACKSTAGE
Wow! Not one but two Digital Shorts in one episode! They are doubling down tonight! I actually think this was the stronger of the the two shorts and a totally great spoof of the above-mentioned Gotye video. It also helped solidify the notion that Taran Killam is a new fave and a definite future of SNL!

GOTYE: “EYES WIDE OPEN”
Here’s another song by Gotye, I guess this is the next one we’ll be hearing all the time.

PRINCIPAL FRYE PROM
I always approach the final sketch of the night as a bit of an anomaly, it’s always the sketch that usually takes the biggest risk. Said risk either pays off greatly or just kinda flops. This premise has been used before but paid off because we got to see Jay Pharaoh perform something original. And it worked well, so well in fact that he made himself laugh just a bit too much.

That’s it folks the night is over and I’m not really sure much happened. As usual, there’s always a few stand out moments, but this episode didn’t have much in the way of a present host. Not that Brolin did a bad job, he just didn’t seem to have many chances to do any heavy lifting that gave him a stand out moment of the night. I do have to give props to the writers for not recycling older bits and diving into new territory. However, besides some of the funniest work by Andy Samberg in a Game of Thrones sketch and two great Digital Shorts, this episode was simply one that ranked in the middle.

I do have high hopes for May 5th when the show comes back with host Eli Manning and Rhianna. The last time a Manning hosted the night it was a pleasant surprise and a great show making a now classic United Way sketch.

Review: Jim Gaffigan "Mr. Universe"

When Jim Gaffigan announced his plan to self-release his latest stand-up special it wasn’t really surprising. The trend has gained momentum amongst comics with a fanbase big enough to support the idea. Mr. Universe you are a good guy, so now is your time and we need the pale force.

Gaffigan stands in small and unique company. He’s one of the few comedians that works clean and has an act for nearly anyone to enjoy, yet he’s still able to walk the line where he’s edgy, respected by peers, gets critical acclaim, and makes a decent living at it. Like Bill Cosby before him, Brian Regan next to him, and maybe Pete Holmes after him, Gaffigan is a stellar clean comedian because he follows his muse, it just so happens there’s a lot of snacks where the muse is headed.

The special kicks off with Gaffigan strolling into Washington DC’s Warner Theater to a Reggie Watts-scored soundtrack he then patiently waits in the front row for the show to begin. Once its showtime we’re filled in on what he’s been up to since King Baby and baby is the word. Jim’s a new dad for the 4th time over (he’s “Amish”) and like Patton Oswalt’s most recent special, it allows the chance for the transition into nearly 20 minutes of material ranging from child birth, getting no sleep, bed wetting, and family vacations. It’s not material that wasn’t covered before but in the hands of Gaffigan, it’s elevated to something that’s smart, conversational, and damn funny.

In fact, that’s a statement that could be applied to much of Gaffigan’s act. He’s just so good about it, he can take such simple and relateable concepts, dust them off and give them one hell of an original shine through his effortless delivery and general good-natured vibe. Gaffigan doesn’t want to offend anyone, he’d rather you laugh your ass off. Something I’ve always admired about him is that my mother would find him hilarious (she has a great sense of humor) and I’d still want to turn to a friend and say, “this guy has a killer 10 minutes about bacon!”

Another big part of Gaffigan’s delivery is his aside voice. It’s a unique part of his act that he uses with amazing effectiveness to give an fictional voice to the thoughts of his audience. It could represent that voice in our head we all have when we’re unsure about something, Gaffigan has just been able to externalize this voice and give it a condescending lady vibe.

It’s probably most impressive watching him take the piss out of big business. He tackles Disney, McDonalds, and Subway with such surgical efficiency. It’s more devastating than any carpet bomb any other comedian would drop. In fact, it appears so harmless and endearing these companies might actually thank him for the jokes about their brand.

Gaffigan is also pretty obsessed with food. He’s known to have long bits about everything from bacon to Waffle House. And lest we forget, Hot Pockets. In fact he discusses food so much the special could easily run with the longer title, “Mr. Universe… is hungry. When do we eat?” But for lack of a better way to put it, that is the comedian’s bread and butter and why stop doing it when he’s so damn good at it? Jim is a master at pointing out the ridiculousness of food and our approach toward it. I can’t figure out how he manages to get something so fresh out of subjects he’s well-worn but once again he managed to do so.

Mr. Universe delivers another solid hour 75 minutes of Jim Gaffigan doing what he does best - entertaining them all. He may have gotten the title of his special while on a jag about exercise, but it’s this basic premise that dominating mass appeal gives him the greatest strength.

Jon Lovitz Uses Twitter To Get Anti-Semitic Bullies Expelled

Jon Lovitz ran to Twitter after finding out three teenage girls were harassing his friend’s daughter. These girls drew swastikas made from maple syrup in front of his friend’s home and left a pile of dog feces on the doorstep, all in the dead of night. The kicker? Allegedly one of their mothers drove the girls to and from the vandalized home.

Last week, Lovitz tweeted, “Some coward & idiot left this on a friend’s doorstep, yesterday. This is an insult to all of us,” on along with a photo of the vandalism. He later tweeted, “Let them be famous as Jew haters. Pls RT,” attaching a photo of the three girls.

The girls admitted to committing the vandalism and have since apologized for their wrongdoing. Police said they could not press charges since the damage was not permanent, but the girls’ school, which could take action, expelled all three. However, police are looking into any violation of laws by the mother who allegedly drove the three girls.

Four days later Lovitz provided the resolution, “UPDATE!!!! The three girls who vandalized my friends home with swastikas and dog crap, have been expelled from their school permanently.”

This public outing of the three young ladies has sparked a lot of Twitter activity as to whether Lovitz acted correctly. Was their outing justified? Or was he bullying himself?

What do you think? Was Lovitz justified?

Review: Jo Koy "Lights Out"

Following his 2009 debut, Don’t Make Him Angry, comedian and frequent Chelsea Lately guest, Jo Koy is back with his extended and uncensored release, Lights Out, which dropped April 3rd via Comedy Central. Lights Out marks Koy’s second Comedy Central special. The comedian has also appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Last Call with Carson Daly, BET’s Comic View and Jamie Foxx Presents: Laffapalooza.

Lights Out includes a one hour stand-up special, which Comedy Central filmed at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, CA, plus an additional 15 minutes of material not included in that broadcast. The bonus content is comprised of the first feature entitled, “All Access”, which contains backstage footage of his performance. The second, “DJ Josephine”, consists of Koy as a special guest on his mother’s AM radio show.

From the start of Lights Out, it becomes apparent as to what a day in the life of Koy revolves around, being a Filipino, grandson, son, and father. Typically staying within these topics, Koy immediately resonates with his audience on both an emotional and physical level. Yes, not every listener is of the Filipino ethnicity, but that comment was meant to emphasize the ethnic equality Koy indirectly promotes with Lights Out.

Koy’s family stories have a Filipino kick to them, but the overall premise is common in a family no matter its origin. The topic of mothers nagging their children is universal; Koy just gives his an Asian touch. With the tracks, “You Got Ruppied”, “How My Mom Did It” “If I Lost Something” and “Church”, Koy’s Asian dialect when imitating his mother, aka DJ Josephine, is effortlessly consistent and adds to the hilarity of family-oriented jokes.

What is most likely not applicable across society is a child who calls his private part a Ting-Ting. Sorry Koy, but your son is probably flying solo on that one. The stand-out joke begins in the track, “History of Ting-Ting” and continues in “Filipino Moms and Their Sons”. In fear of giving away or tainting this favorite, we’ll only elaborate with an afterthought. You better not pass over these tracks on Lights Out. They deserve your utmost attention.

With the Ting-Ting pushed aside, Koy also dabbled in jokes discussing the weather and a sleep disorder. While these subjects add variety to the album, Koy is a family man at heart and Lights Out will not let you forget that.

Artie Lange Pours Some Comedy Juice

Comedy Juice is one of the top live comedy brands in the world, producing hundreds of A-list stand up comedy events each year, and run by a comic named Mark Serittella, who lives in LA.

It’s featured stars like Sarah Silverman, Daniel Tosh, Aziz Ansari, Dane Cook, and Marc Maron on a regular basis, and also puts out new talent on their way up the ladder.

They’re doing a regular show every Tuesday night at 10 P.M. at Gotham Comedy Club. I heard that my old pal Artie Lange was expected to do a guest spot, so I went down to check it out, and was really glad I did. It was a super show. I hadn’t seen Artie since before he went to rehab, so we reminisced on camera for Comedy Matters TV.

The show was hosted by Jared Logan, and also on the show were Helen Hong, who I see more now since she moved to LA than I did when she lived in NY, Al Madrigal from The Daily Show, Rory Albanese, producer of The Daily Show, who’s a very funny comic in his own right, Chris DeStefano, and Donnell Rawlings.

Artie went up and destroyed the room. People love to see Artie Lange. He’s one of the only performers I’ve ever seen who got a standing ovation just by walking out on the stage. That was at Town Hall during the NY Comedy Festival.

This was the video I shot with Artie :

For more on Artie Lange and Jeffrey Gurian, visit his website or the Comedy Matters Vlog. You can also email him at Jeffrey@jeffreygurian.com. Or follow him on Twitter @JeffreyGurian

5 Comedians That Make Great TV Sidekicks

As an equal diehard comedy and television fan I often find myself saying “oh look it’s ________” when the TV is on. That’s because a lot of comedians aren’t just slugging things out in the clubs, they are also stealing great supporting roles on sitcoms and offering up comic relief in dramas. They aren’t carrying their own show like Seinfeld or Romano, but they are important for the jokes nonetheless. Here’s a breakdown of some great comedians in supporting roles currently on TV.

Baron Vaughn
See him on: Fairly Legal on USA

Baron Vaughn plays the know-it-all and all-supporting legal assistant Leonardo Prince to Kate Reed in the USA drama Fairly Legal. On the show, Prince is a fan off geekdom, Star Wars, and Comic-Con that can helps Reed track down details to help her win mediation cases. Vaughn also appeared in movies like Cloverfield and Black Dynamite. His stand-up credits include the Awkward Comedy Show, late night appearances on Lopez, Conan, and Fallon. He’s done films for College Humor and released a stand-up album, Raised By Cable

in late 2011.

Kumail Nanjiani
See Him On: Franklin & Bash on TNT

While on the subject of legal assistants, it turns out that comics are good at them as Nanjiani also plays one on the TNT show Franklin & Bash. Nanjiani’s Pindar Singh is a bit agoraphobic and germaphobic who doesn’t like leaving the F&B compound. The comedian was born in Karachi Pakistan where he lived until moving to the US at 18 to attend college. He’s a regular on the podcast circuit, and was a writer for the TV show Michael & Michael Have Issues and has recurred on the The Colbert Report. Kumail has performed stand-up on on the late night circuit and we hear plans on releasing a debut stand-up album in 2012.

Natasha Leggero
See her on: Are You There Chelsea? on NBC and Ugly Americans on Comedy Central

Nasha Leggero is not only a brilliant stand-up comedian, she’s also very good at taking the gold-digging persona she has on stage and plugging it into the Chelsea Handler-created show Are You There Chelsea? as the superficial waitress Nikki Natoli. Leggero isn’t the only comic on Chelsea? as she’s flanked by the equally funny Ali Wong, Lauren Lapkus and Lenny Clarke. She also has some pretty tremendous supporting credits to her name including suporting Hank Azaria in the short-lived Free Agents, a judge on Last Comic Standing, Chelsea Lately, Reno 911, Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time. And when she doesn’t want to be seen, you can hear her voice work as Callie Maggotbone on Comedy Central’s animated series, Ugly Americans, as well as Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and The Life And Times Of Tim.

Matt Braunger
See him on: Up Al Night on NBC

Matt Braunger has been on TV before, serving as one of the cast members of the final season of MadTV. He also released himself a great stand-up album the same year called Soak Up The Night. But you can currently catch Braunger as Gene, the annoying neighbor in the show Up All Night. When he’s not one-upping Will Arnett he’s performing stand-up and should release a new album this year.

Aziz Ansari
See Him On: Parks And Recreation on NBC

Aziz is easily the biggest profile comedian on this list. He’s also one of the best each week serving up Tom Haverford-isms on NBC’s Parks And Recreation. Ansari is no stranger to stage nor screen creating the hilarious sketch show Human Giant and taking on movie roles such as 30 Minutes or Less, Funny People, and I Love You Man. He also just self-released his own stand-up special, Dangerously Delicious and regularly appears on talk shows to tell us about hilarious encounters he has with celebrities.

Sofia Vergara Hosted SNL: 90 Minutes And The Return of Gilly?!

Welcome back! It seems like its been ages since we’ve gathered for an SNL recap. The cast and crew has taken most of March off for an extended Spring Break. It wasn’t an uneventful break as they hired a new featured player Kate McKinnon as the rumor mill went crazy about some cast members potentially departing.

Sofia Vergara was tapped to handle the hosting duties for the night. It’s her first time hosting the show and what I think is a good call for a few reasons - 1) she’s pretty damn popular as a cast member of the red-hot Modern Family 2) she’s attractive and who would have issues watching her on TV for a spell and 3) despite these two factors, she seems to be completely willing to make fun of herself to sell a joke.

Granted, it’s a given we’re going to have to endure more than a few jokes about Vergara’s thick accent and the case of not understanding it. But let’s hope the weeks off helped prime the writer’s creative juices (as it usually does) and we get ourselves an episode worth talking about.

COLD OPENING: MITT ROMNEY CAMPAIGN
I see three weeks off and the “Mitt Romney is not like us” jokes just keep on coming. While I understand the coverage of the GOP primaries is necessary, I do believe there has to be new way to tackle this topic. With that being said, this was a funnier than most Romney cold openings but like Mitt Romney himself, it doesn’t mean he’s the ideal cold opening.

MONOLOGUE
Vergara delivers us a fairly straightforward monologue that didn’t rely on a lot of cast interaction. Vergara made a few solid jokes about her accent, Al Bundy, New Jerseee!!! and South American heritage. She then made a promise to us, in no few words, forgave us for staring at her chest for the whole night.

WE’RE JUST FRIENDS
This commercial could’ve very well been a Digital Short, it also explained the photo of Andy Samberg and Jason Sudekis that circulated around the web earlier this week. It’s the first of three pre-recorded sketches we’ll get in the night.

Now is also the moment of the night when I realize that Sofia is in every commercial that’s currently airing in between the show. So we’re probably going to get the full 90 minutes of Vergara-ness.

BEIN’ QUIRKY WITH ZOOEY DESCHANEL
I’m glad this has become a return sketch, if not for any other reason than Taran Killam’s take on Michael Cera’s awkwardness. The first time around it wasn’t as tight as it was time around. Tying in Vergara as Fran Drescher was perfect (even though I wouldn’t define Fran as quirky). Kristen Wiig also does a great Drew Barrymore impression and the desk of typewriters just worked. Alas, once we get to Andy Samberg as Mayim Bialik the sketch is just the right amount of over the top. One of the best of the night.

ALMOST PIZZA
Almost pizza, eat some… or die! Bill Hader, you are one of my favs!

NEWS TEAM PROMO
Vergara takes on a bit of an English accent in this sketch that mirrored the FOX sports sketch that was done back when Channing Tatum hosted the show. Fred Armisen’s goofy anchorman was funny but this sketch coulda benefited from being shorter. This is our weakest sketch of the night in my opinion, hopefully the others are better.

GILLY IN SEX ED
For the last year or so we were under the impression that Kristen Wiig had retired the Gilly character and for good reason. Then like a bad cold, Gilly is back, hooray? This entire sketch seemed like it was resurrected either because the writers wanted to hear Vergara say “Giiiiilllly” with her accent or they had no other great sketch ideas that could incorporate her as a Sex Ed teacher that could draw a realistic image of her vagina. I like and dislike this Gilly sketch for all the same reasons I dislike/like all previous Gilly sketches and in the end, it shoulda stayed in retirement.

ONE DIRECTION: “WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL”
The X-Factor approved One Direction performed on a different show last night as well, it was on iCarly which is probably where they belonged more. I’m not 100% sure them performing on SNL at midnight on a Saturday is the prime demographic to get the tween girls screaming. Looking at this on the bright side, they all have Bieber-like hair but at least the synchronized dancing is at a minimum.

WEEKEND UPDATE
I’m always excited about Bobby Moynihan’s drunk uncle appearances on Weekend Update. In fact, I’m glad SNL finally figured out how to properly use Bobby on the show, it took a while but his appearances on Weekend Update are now only rivaled by Bill Hader at this point. And I do too want to keep my wi-fi organic.

MANUEL ORTIZ SHOW
This sketch has never made me laugh, and I’m nearly positive it was dusted off tonight was because a bonafide Latino was available to add some legitimate dance spice. I would also reckon that had I possessed some personal interest in One Direction, their drop in woulda made me laugh a bit more. We need to retire this sketch and keep it retired.

And we have ourselves a rehash of the Lil’ Poundcake commercial.

WATCH WHAT HAPPENS LIVE
Taran Killam is the future of SNL and I’d love to see him bumped up to a regular as soon as possible. His injection of new character like Bravo head honcho/host Andy Cohen are funny and solid. This sketch also marked the first speaking role of Kate McKinnon with a great turn as Tabatha Coffey, the feisty blonde taker-over.

ONE DIRECTION “ONE THING”
About 20 seconds into this performance, my girlfriend made the declaration “If I were 13, I’d love these kids!” so they got that going for them.

PANTENE COMMERCIAL
This might be the most meta moment of the night since Vergara served in every sketch then was in nearly every actual commercial in between. So why not write a sketch that blends both of these elements? It was also a great moment for McKinnon to shine as a great Penelope Cruz foil for Vergara (as herself) to play off of. McKinnon’s Cruz wasn’t perfect but it was witty because it didn’t simply say “look we have weird accents” but made one of the two players with an accent struggle with difficult words. Refrigerator.

HUNGER GAMES REPORTER
As someone who hasn’t really given much notice or care to The Hunger Games phenomenon I did find this idea somewhat interesting. Though it fell apart kinda quickly I must admit, Vergara declaring “They should be called Fun-ger Games because I’m having so much fun!” and “Booom! Hunger Games!” generated bigger chuckles from me than they probably should’ve. Though I would like to see a sketch of The Hunger Games Puppy Bowl after that screenshot.

There were few sketches that weren’t great, and while I wasn’t timing it, I’m nearly certain Vergara was just as heavily featured in the ads that ran in between the show as during the show itself. She seems to be part of a bottomless well of endorsement deals. And though it would’ve been fairly easy to reduce her just a host with a large chest and heavy accent, the show decided to harness her enthusiasm instead, resulting in a great episode. It’s very easy to tell when the cast and the host are having a good time with the show. And Vergara’s eagerness to jump into the night payed off big.

What were your thoughts on the night? Until then, let’s mark the calendars to do this all again next week when Josh Brolin hosts again and Gotye drops in as the musical guest.
